For the first time in ten years, the number of students up again
In the academic year 2019/20, 76,728 students were enrolled in tertiary education, 1% more than in the academic year 2018/19. Almost 6,000 students moved to Slovenia to study, mostly from the countries of the former Yugoslavia.
For the first time in ten years more students than in the previous academic year
In the academic year 2019/20, 76,728 students were enrolled in tertiary education, 1% more than in the academic year 2018/19. For the last nine years, the number of students has been constantly decreasing, on average by more than 4,320 students per academic year. This year, however, there were again more students than a year before. This was mostly due to more doctoral students (up by 7% compared to 2018/19) and students in higher professional programmes (up by 3.2%).
14% of all tertiary students in the academic year 2019/20 were students in higher vocational education (10,662).
In higher education study programmes, on the other hand, there were 66,066 students. Students enrolled in the 1st cycle higher education programmes represented almost two thirds (63.5%) of all higher education students (19,696 in professional and 22,237 in academic programmes). 31.5% were master students (4,368 in uniform master programmes and 16,459 in 2nd cycle programmes after they had already been awarded a 1st cycle diploma). Doctoral students represented 5% of all higher education students.
Almost 15,000 students entered higher education for the first time
Despite a significant decrease in the number of students in the last decade, the number of new entrants to higher education remained almost the same. Since the academic year 2011/12 it has been varying between 14,000 and 15,000 all the time. In the academic year 2019/20, 14,988 students were enrolled for the first time in the first year of undergraduate studies, which is 2.4% more than in the previous academic year (14,618).
6,673 students were new entrants to higher professional studies, most of them (79%) with previously successfully completed professional upper-secondary education. On the other hand, the majority (84%) of 8,315 newcomers to higher academic or uniform master studies attained a general upper secondary education before entering tertiary education.
The majority of new entrants to higher education (62%) were 19 years old. One in ten was older than 22, while 370 new entrants were 30 or older.
Education and health still female predominated fields, while ICT and technology are of interest mostly to men
In the academic year 2019/20, most students were enrolled in the study programs in the fields of engineering, manufacturing and construction (18.6%), followed by business, administration and law (18.5%), and health and social security (13.5 %). In contrast, the fewest students were enrolled in the fields of agriculture, forestry, fisheries and veterinary medicine (2.9%) and information and communication technologies (5.6%).
Women outnumber men among tertiary education students (57.3%). They predominate in most of the fields. The share of women is the highest in the field of education (88%), followed by health and welfare (77%). There are, however, still two typically »male« fields: engineering, manufacturing and construction (83% of male students) and information and communication technologies (74%).
An average student is almost 24 years old
On average, students in tertiary education in the academic year 2019/20 were 23.9 years old. The youngest were students in higher academic study programmes (on average 21 years old), while students in higher professional programmes were on average 2 years older (23.3) and students in higher vocational education 5 year older (24.9). The average age of master students was 26.5 years, while doctoral students were much older (33.1 years on average).
There was a significant difference between the age of full-time and part-time students. While full-time students were 22.3 years old on average, their colleagues studying part-time were 7 years older (29.3 on average).
More mobile students than in the previous academic year
Among all students enrolled in the academic year 2019/20, 5,974 or 7.8% were mobile students, i.e. students with registered permanent residence abroad, from more than 100 different countries. As in the previous academic years, half of them were from the countries of the former Yugoslavia (3,506), a little over a quarter from the EU member states (1,667), and others from other countries (801). Compared to the previous academic year, the number of mobile students increased by 17.8%, and their share among all tertiary education students by 1.2 percentage points.
