Most occasional work at the tertiary level of education is done at higher education institutions
The number of occasional pedagogical employees at higher education institutions increases every year, while it decreases at vocational colleges. In the academic year 2023/24, one-eighth of all part-time workers were employed at vocational colleges, with the rest at higher education institutions.
At higher education institutions, more part-time workers every year, fewer at higher vocational colleges
The number of part-time workers at higher education institutions increased by 12.1% in the academic year 2023/24 compared to the previous academic year, while at higher vocational colleges it decreased by 1.3%. Over the last five years, the number of part-time employees at higher education institutions went up by nearly half, while at higher vocational colleges it went down by more than a quarter.
Half of the full-time employees at higher education institutions and higher vocational colleges are also employed part-time
There were 6,969 part-time teaching staff at higher education institutions and higher vocational colleges, of whom 43% were full-time employees at the mentioned institutions. These employees represent half of all full-time employees at higher education institutions and higher vocational colleges. The ratio of male to female part-time employees was roughly the same (3,540 men and 3,429 women).
Among the part-time workers not employed full-time at higher education institutions, there were more women than men (by 6 percentage points), while at higher vocational colleges, there were more men than women (by 12 percentage points).
At higher vocational colleges, the largest number of part-time workers not employed full-time held 2nd cycle university education and at higher education institutions 3rd cycle university education
At higher education institutions, 56% of part-time workers not employed full-time held the highest level of education, while 44% had completed 2nd cycle university education. Among part-time workers not employed full-time at higher vocational colleges, 48% had 2nd cycle university education, 30% had the highest level of education, and 22% had 1st cycle university education.

A higher share of retired persons at higher vocational colleges, while the share of active workers is higher at higher education institutions
At higher education institutions, compared to higher vocational colleges, there were considerably more individuals who were employed elsewhere (four-fifths at the former, two-thirds at the latter). Conversely, the share of part-time retired persons was higher at higher vocational colleges than at higher education institutions (one-quarter at the former, one-sixth at the latter).
