Unemployment rate below 4%

In the Slovenian labour market, a very low unemployment rate was recorded. In the 4th quarter of 2022, it was below 4%.

Key Labour Force Survey statistics:

- 35,000 unemployed persons (6,000 fewer than in the previous quarter)

The unemployment rate continues to fall

The number of unemployed persons in the fourth quarter fell by approximately 6,000, to about 35,000. Compared to the previous quarter, this was a decline of 15%, while compared to the same period of the previous year, the number decreased by almost a quarter (24% or 11,000 persons). 

We also recorded the lowest unemployment rate to date. It dropped below 4%. The unemployment rate was 3.5%, 0.5 of a percentage point lower than in the previous quarter and 1.1 percentage points lower than in the same quarter a year before. The unemployment rate was 3.2% for men and 3.8% for women. The unemployment rate for both genders declined at the quarterly level, for men by 0.7 of a percentage point and for women by 0.3 of a percentage point. 

The number of employed approximately the same as a year before

In the fourth quarter of 2022, there were 982,000 persons in employment in Slovenia. The number was approximately the same as in the same period of the previous year. The employment rate also remained the same at 56.3%. 

83% of persons in employment were working as employees in labour relation, 12% were self-employed, 2% were student workers and 3% were working in other forms of work or as contributing family workers. 

The employment rate in the age group 20–64 years was 78.2%. The share of employed men in this age group was almost 8 percentage points higher than the share of employed women. 

The majority of inactive persons are students and retired persons

In the Labour Force Survey the inactive population in the age group 15–74 years is divided into three categories, namely persons who (i) want to work, but are not looking for work, (ii) are looking for work, but are not ready to accept it within two weeks and (iii) don’t want to work.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, there were 561,000 such persons, of whom 46% were men and 54% were women. Compared to the previous quarter, the number of inactive persons increased by 5%. The majority (96%) of inactive persons are those who do not want to work and are not looking for work either. A quarter of them were students and two thirds of them were retired persons.

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
Employed persons are persons aged 15–89 who during the reference week did any work for pay or profit (in cash or kind) or family gain for at least one hour, including contributing family workers. Persons who were not working but had a job from which they were temporarily absent are also considered employed. Absences include holidays, annual, sick, parental, maternity, parental leave, such working arrangements or compensation of hours, education or training connected to the job. Seasonal workers absent due to off-season time but performing any kind of work linked to their seasonal work are also listed among employed persons. The same goes for persons absent due to other reasons or lay-off if the total duration of absence is three months or less.

Inactive persons are those aged 15–89 who are not classified as persons in employment or as unemployed persons, and persons older than 89 years.
