Experimental statistics: Use of mobile operators data for tourism purposes, 3rd quarter 2024
The largest number of foreign users roaming in Slovenian mobile network were from Germany
In August, 807,000 Slovenian mobile phone service users were in Croatia, which is as many as the number of users who were in other eleven most visited countries. In August, Slovenian mobile operators registered 10.1 million foreign users of mobile phone services, 2.7 million of them from Germany.
Slovenian mobile phone users travelled to 166 countries, the largest number of them to Croatia
In the 3rd quarter of 2024, Slovenian mobile phone users travelled to 166 countries as multi-day visitors (tourists), as same-day visitors or as transit passengers. In all three months, the largest number of Slovenian mobile phone users travelled to Croatia, followed by Italy, Austria and Germany, with the exception of August when Bosnia and Herzegovina was fourth.
Croatia visited by as many Slovenian users as eleven other most visited countries in total
The largest number of different Slovenian users of mobile phone services travelled to Croatia in August (807,000) and the lowest in September (almost 533,000). The largest number of Slovenian users travelled to Austria and Italy also in August (almost 254,000 and 253,000, respectively). In August, Croatia was visited by as many Slovenian mobile users as eleven other most visited countries together.
In August 2024, besides three neighbouring countries more than 10,000 different Slovenian users visited the following countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Hungary, Serbia, France, Greece, Czechia, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium. The number of Slovenian users who travelled to the stated countries increased the most in Austria (17%), followed by Serbia and Croatia (14% each), and France and Belgium (11% each). On the other hand, the number of users slightly decreased in Hungary, Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina (each by 2%) and in Greece (by 1%).
Slovenian mobile phone users as tourists spent more than half of all days in Croatia
In the 3rd quarter, mobile phone users travelled as tourists (multi-day visitors) to 143 countries, where they spent together between July and September almost 16.8 million days. They spent more than half of those days (8.7 million or 52%) in Croatia. At a year-on-year basis the number of days spent by multi-day visitors in Croatia decreased by 2%.
They stayed in Croatia on average for a week (7.2 days in July, 7.6 days in August and 5.9 days in September).
In addition to Croatia, large numbers of mobile phone users in July visited for several days Italy (almost 66,000), and in August and September Austria (77,000 and 67,000, respectively).
Fewer same-day visits to neighbouring countries
Slovenian users most often travelled to neighbouring countries also as same-day visitors. The data on same-day visits also include non-touristic same-day visits (i.e. daily work migrations). They most often visited Croatia (1,259,000 same-day visits or 2% fewer than in the same quarter of the previous year). The number of same-day visits to Austria decreased by 1% (816,000) and to Italy by 6% (482,000). The number of same-day visits to Hungary was a lot lower and it also decreased (more than 74,000 or 15% fewer).
The largest number of same-days visits to Croatia was registered in July, and to other three neighbouring countries in September.
In August, more than 10 million foreign users of mobile phone services came to Slovenia, the largest number from Germany
Mobile phone users from 137 countries visited Slovenia in the 3rd quarter of 2024. Slovenian mobile operators registered the largest number of foreign mobile phone users in August (10.1 million). The number of foreign users in September (almost 5.7 million) was 44% lower than in August. In comparison with the same month of the previous year, in August 6% more foreign users were registered, and in July and September 4% and 3% fewer, respectively.
In all three months of the 3rd quarter, the largest number of foreign mobile users came from Germany. Mobile operators registered the largest number of German users in August (2,675,000 or 7% more than in August last year) and the lowest in September (1,332,000 or 2% more). In an individiual month users from Austria, Italy, the Netherlands and Croatia took turns in number from second till forth place.
The largest number of foreign mobile phone users in Slovenia only in transit
In all the countries from where most foreign users came, transit passengers (stayed in Slovenia for less than 6 hours) represented the highest share of all users from a particular country.
Among all German mobile phone users in Slovenia in August, 93% were transit passengers. Among Italian users the share of transit passengers was the highest in July (94%) and among users from Austria in July and August (91%).
Among mobile phone users from neighbouring countries Italian same-day visitors stayed in Slovenia for the shortest time
Austrian mobile phone users made more than 1,127,000 same-day visits to Slovenia in the 3rd quarter of 2024, German users made 831,000 same-day visits and Italian users 777,000 same-day visits. Among same-day visits of Italian users, 67% were shorter same-day visits, during which they stayed in Slovenia 6–12 hours, while on 33% of same-day visits they stayed in Slovenia longer, 12–18 hours. German same-day visitors stayed on 54% of same-day visits for a shorter time (6–12 hours), while Austrian same-day visitors stayed on 52% of same-day visits for a longer time (12–18 hours).

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
The data are published as experimental because the survey is new and because the measuring instrument, the methodology of data collection and the indicators are still being developed.
Some mobile operators still have problems with (correct) coding of users by countries. Data on users can include besides mobile phones also data on other smart devices. In addition, data can also include usage of mobile phone networks by devices that connect and exchange data with other devices (Internet of Things).
The usage of eSIM cards, which are offered by mobile phone operators in the EU, is counted to the country of the mobile phone operator that provides eSIM card service and not to the country from where foreign mobile phone users are actually coming.
As there are many methodological and definitional inconsistencies between the surveys, mobile operators’ statistics, which in this case are cited as experimental statistics, and statistics of other official surveys on tourism statistics, cannot be compared directly.
As part of the mobile operators' statistics, an individual is defined as a user of a mobile device roaming in a foreign network during the trip. In order to be recognized as a "traveller", they must therefore have an active mobile device, which is not a requirement in the case of other surveys.
Mobile operators' statistics also do not contain other details about individuals' trips (e.g. the reasons for travel) on the basis of which it is determined whether an individual visit is actually a "tourist" visit or not. It is highly possible that data on one-day visitors who travel between Slovenia and neighbouring countries included many of those that are otherwise not taken into account within tourism statistics (e.g. daily work migrants, truck drivers in transit, etc.).
Additional explanations are available in the methodological explanations.
