Orchard census, 2023
The number of orchard plantations slightly higher than in 2017; they are also better equipped
In 2023, total area of orchard plantations increased compared to 2017 by 8%, and the number of producers by 33%. An average producer was cultivating 1.11 hectare of orchard plantation, 20% less than in 2017.
The largest area of orchard plantations in Podravska, the largest number of orchards in Goriška
In Slovenia, 8,496 individual orchard plantations were cultivated last year, measuring in total 4,369 hectares. An average plantation measured 0.5 hectare. A review by regions shows significant differences in area, number, and size of plantations.
The largest area of orchard plantations was located in the Podravska statistical region (1,164 hectares, or 27% of total area), divided between 1,369 individual plantations. Here we also recorded the largest plantations, as they measure on average 0.86 hectare. The largest number of plantations was located in the Goriška statistical region (1,975 plantations on 573 hectares), but they are much smaller, as they measure on average slightly less than 0.3 hectare.
The fewest plantations are located in the Zasavska statistical region (67 plantations on 19 hectares), accounting together only 0.4% of total area of orchard plantations in Slovenia.
Total area of orchard plantations larger, a third more producers
The analysis of the data and comparison with 2017 shows that the area of orchard plantations during this period increased by 308 hectares (by 8%). The number of producers increased even more (by 33%). Altogether, 3,938 producers were cultivating fruits on this area.
An individual producer was cultivating on average 1.11 hectare of orchard plantations, or 0.27 hectare less than in 2017 (1.38 hectare). Two thirds of producers were cultivating fruits on an area smaller than 0.5 hectare. It is in the smaller size categories that we recorded the largest increase in the number of growers.
On average, the largest producers were cultivating fruit in the Podravska statistical region (1.86 hectares), followed by producers from the Posavska region (1.76 hectares). The smallest producers were located in the Koroška statistical region (0.44 hectare).
51 different fruit species – fewer apples and pears, more walnuts and berries
Although apple trees grow on almost half of the total area of orchard plantations, their area has decreased by a third in the last twenty years. In 2023, they were cultivated on less than 2,000 hectares.
The second most common fruit species were walnuts; compared to 2017 they were planted on additional 260 hectares (in 2023 we detected a 76% increase in the area of walnuts), on total almost 600 hectares.
Overall, between 2017 and 2023, we observed the largest decrease in the total area of apples and pears (by 14%). The area planted with stone fruits (plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries and sour cherries) has not changed much (−1%). The area planted with nuts increased the most (by 95%), followed by the area with berries (by 54%).
Orchards are better equipped
Around 15% of all orchard plantations were equipped with irrigation systems, representing 20% of total area (867 hectares). The area of irrigation systems has increased by 42% since 2017. The most common irrigation methods were drip (629 hectares), sprinkling (118 hectares) or a combination of drip and sprinkling (106 hectares). Hail protection was used on 1,433 hectares, on 1,011 individual plantations. In 2017, it was used on 710 plantations or 1,247 hectares.
