Consumer price indices, August 2024
Annual inflation at 0.9%, monthly at −0.2%
In August, consumer prices were on average higher by 0.9% annually and lower by 0.2% monthly. In one year, service prices went up on average by 4.1%, while goods prices went down by 0.7%.
Annual price growth lower
Price growth at the annual level decreased again, to 0.9% in August.
In one year, service prices increased on average by 4.1%, while goods prices decreased by 0.7%. As regards goods, semi-durable and durable goods prices went down by 4.6% and 1.2%, respectively, while non-durable goods prices went up by 0.3%.
The annual growth rate was pushed up the most (by 0.5 of a percentage point) by 6.7% higher prices in restaurants and hotels. 0.3 p.p. each was contributed by higher prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco (by 5.2%), miscellaneous goods and services (by 4.0%), products and services in the group recreation and culture (by 3.0%) and food and non-alcoholic beverages (by 1.4%).
On the other hand, the annual inflation rate was reduced by 0.5 p.p. by 3.3% lower prices in the group housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, and by 0.4 p.p. by 6.5% cheaper clothing and footwear.
Summer sales pushed monthly inflation down
Compared to July, consumer prices decreased by 0.2%.
Due to summer sales in August, lower prices of clothing (by 6.7%) and footwear (by 10.0%) contributed the most (0.3 and 0.2 p.p., respectively) to the monthly deflation.
Cheaper transport services (by 7.3%) and other services in respect of personal transport equipment (by 4.6%) added 0.1 p.p. to the monthly deflation.
On the other hand, monthly deflation was reduced by 0.2 p.p. by higher prices of motor fuels (diesel by 3.4% and petrol by 3.6%). Additional 0.1 p.p. each was added by higher prices of package holidays (by 1.3%), food (by 0.3%) and all other price increases in August.
Harmonised indices of consumer prices
Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, this August the annual growth of consumer prices was 1.1% (a year ago 6.1%). Prices at the monthly level on average remained the same.
In one year, service prices went up on average by 5.2% and goods prices down by 1.1%. Non-durable goods prices remained on average the same, while semi-durable and durable goods prices went down by 4.7% and 1.8%, respectively.
Annual inflation rates in July 2024 for all EU-27 Member States are available here. Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in July the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 2.6% (a month before 2.5%). In the EU-27 Member States it was 2.8% (a month before 2.6%). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Finland (0.5%) and the highest in Romania (5.8%); in Slovenia it stood at 1.4%.
