Forest accounts, 2023
In 2023 higher values of forestry output, production costs and somewhat lower employment
Gross value added in forestry in 2023 stayed at about the same level as in 2022; it reached 0.6% of gross domestic product.
Factor income similar to 2022
The values of some income categories in forestry stayed at about the same level as in 2022. Gross value added reached EUR 434 million; its share in gross domestic product was 0.6%. Factor income amounted to EUR 343 million; the value increased by 1% over the previous year. Factor income per employee amounted to EUR 54,969. Income was influenced by the ratio between the values of forestry output (up by 2%), intermediate consumption (up by 4%) and employment (down by 1%).
Forestry output value higher due to the higher values of forestry goods and forestry services
The value of forestry output was EUR 817 million, which was a 2% increase over the previous year. The main reasons for the increase were higher values of forestry goods output and forestry services. The value of forestry goods increased due to somewhat higher production of wood assortments and higher average purchase prices of other industrial roundwood and fuelwood. The value of forestry services reached EUR 91 million, which is an 8% increase over 2022.
Standing timber with the highest share in the value of forestry goods output
The value of forestry goods output reached EUR 727 million (1% more than in the previous year). In the total value, the highest share was represented by standing timber (in accordance with the methodological change, it includes the value of wood increment of the commercial forests and the estimated value of sale of wood per stump) and sawlogs. The share of the former was 52% (0.5 of a percentage point less than in the previous year), and of the latter 28% (almost 4 percentage points less).
Other industrial roundwood and fuelwood on average more expensive
The value of sawlogs and veneer logs was estimated at EUR 204 million; this was 25% of the total forestry output value. The volume of sawlogs production was slightly lower than the year before, and the average sawlogs prices decreased by 3%. Therefore, also the decrease in its production value was observed (by 11%). In the total value of forestry output the values were higher for fuelwood (by 43%) and pulpwood and other industrial roundwood together (by 3%).
Value of forestry services up
The value of forestry goods output accounted for 89% of the total forestry output (EUR 727 million). The share of forestry services was 11%; the value of forestry services increased in comparison with 2022 and it reached EUR 91 million.
Intermediate consumption value also higher
The value of intermediate consumption (EUR 383 million or 4% more than in the previous year) was higher due to higher value of removals (in accordance with the methodological change, it includes the value of removals and the estimated value of sale of wood per stump) and forestry services. In the observed year the value was lower for energy consumption (by 19%). The values of other categories of intermediate consumption stayed at about the same level as in 2022.
Gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) in forestry equipment amounted to EUR 74 million or 7% more than in the previous year.
Employment slightly lower
In 2023, 6,247 employees were involved in the forestry production, while a year earlier the number was 6,335. Most of them were self-employed (5,058 or 2% fewer). In addition to the self-employed, 1,189 paid employees were also involved in the forestry production (1% more than in 2022).

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
The values of standing timber in the output and the intermediate consumption accounts were revised for the 2012–2023 period. The value in the production account includes the sum of values of net increment in forests available for wood supply and the estimated value of the sale of wood on stump. In the intermediate consumption account, the value includes the sum of the value of removals and the estimated value of the sale of wood on stump. Annual values of removals are in line with the report on total gross removals in the international forestry questionnaire Joint Forest Sector Questionnaire (JFSQ).
Due to the harmonization of forestry industry data between forest accounts and national accounts, the time series of forestry services data was also revised for the 2012–2023 period. The values in forest accounts are aligned with the values in national accounts.
