This statistical region of wooded hills and three river valleys lies in the northern part of the country along the border with Austria. As regards traffic, it is difficult to access and is badly connected with the central part of Slovenia.

The environment has been strongly affected by the heavy industry in the valleys. Manufacturing created the highest share of gross value added in the region in 2010. The importance of agriculture in the region is presented by the largest agricultural holdings in terms of their average size of utilised agricultural area and in terms of the number of livestock units. More than 90% of agricultural holdings in Koroška are breeding livestock.

Regarding the average age, managers of agricultural holdings in Koroška were the youngest (53 years); they were on average eight years younger than managers of agricultural holdings in the Notranjsko-kraška region. According to the mean age of total population for the last couple of years Koroška falls right after the Notranjsko-kraška region. In case of matrimony, the situation is different.

Koroška has the highest share of consensual unions and single (never married) persons aged 25-64, while in Notranjsko-kraška the share of married persons among this age group is one of the highest in the country. In Koroška every fifth family is an unmarried couple family; the share of children born in this type of family was with 73% also the highest among Slovenia’s regions.
