ICT sector generated 8% more net turnover, exceeding EUR 6 billion

In 2023, 10,595 enterprises in the ICT sector generated around EUR 6,171 million net turnover and EUR 2,298 million value added.

Key statistics

By producing information and communication technology and providing ICT services, the ICT sector provides the appropriate infrastructure for digitization and promotes innovation.

In 2023, the ICT sector:
  • was comprised of 10,595 active enterprises (4% more than a year earlier),
  • with 36,089 employees and self-employed (also 4% more),
  • generated EUR 6,171 million net turnover (8% more) and
  • EUR 2,298 million value added (7% more).
The number of enterprises in the ICT service sector up by 4%, exceeding 10,000

The ICT sector was comprised of 10,595 active enterprises, 4% more than in 2022. ICT sector enterprises represented 5.3% of all active enterprises engaged predominantly in market activities (5.2% in 2022).

98% of enterprises of the ICT sector were active in the ICT service sector. Their number increased by 4% to 10,376 enterprises.

The growth of enterprises in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (5%) and in activity J63.1 – Data processing, hosting and related activities, web portals (2%) continued.

Almost two thirds of employees and self-employed in the ICT sector employed in computer programming, consultancy and related activities

The ICT sector employed 36,089 employees and self-employed, 4% more than in the previous year. In the ICT manufacturing sector 10% of employees and self-employed of the ICT sector were employed.

In the ICT service sector, the number of employees and self-employed increased by 7% to 32,407. Their number increased the most (by 11%) in activity J58.2 – Software publishing, followed by a 10% increase in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities.

The ICT sector allocated around EUR 1,151 million for wages and salaries, 14% more than a year ago. The share of funds of the ICT sector that were allocated for wages and salaries in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities increased from 59% in 2022 to 63%.

For 15% or EUR 223 million more net turnover in telecommunication activities

Enterprises in the ICT sector generated around EUR 6,171 million net turnover, 8% more than in 2022. 90% of the net turnover was generated by enterprises in the ICT service sector and 10% in the ICT manufacturing sector.

Net turnover increased the most in activity J58.2 – Software publishing for 26%, followed by activities J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (for 17%) and J61 – Telecommunications (for 15%). Enterprises in these three activities generated 71% of net turnover of the ICT sector.

ICT service sector generated more than EUR 2 billion of value added

Enterprises in the ICT sector generated 7% more value added, around EUR 2,298 million. 93% of the value added of the ICT sector was generated by enterprises in the ICT service sector, which exceeded for the first time the value of EUR two billion.

Enterprises in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities generated around 57% of the value added of the ICT sector (55% in 2022). This amounted to around EUR 1,319 million or 11% more than in the previous year.

The valued added (apparent labour productivity) of the ICT sector per employee and self-employed was EUR 63,665 (EUR 62,051 in 2022).

According to the OECD definition, the ICT sector comprises enterprises that are engaged in the production or provision of services of information-communication technologies and are registered in the following NACE Rev. 2 activities: ICT manufacturing sector (C26.1 – Manufacture of electronic components and boards, C26.2 – Manufacture of computers and peripheral equipment, C26.3 – Manufacture of communication equipment, C26.4 – Manufacture of consumer electronics, C26.8 – Manufacture of magnetic and optical media), service ICT sector (G46.5 – Wholesale of information and communication equipment, J58.2 – Software publishing, J61 – Telecommunications, J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities, J63.1 – Data processing, hosting and related activities; web portals, S95.1 – Repair of computers and communication equipment).

The source for the ICT sector data is structural business statistics, where form 2021 onwards the entire section K – Financial and insurance services is observed, as well as sections P – Education, Q – Human health and social work activities, R – Art, entertainment and recreation activities and division S96 – Other personal service activities is observed since 2021.

Therefore, from 2021 on data referring to all enterprises that were active predominantly in market activities are no longer comparable with data from previous years.
