The number of organic farms up, the number of farms in conversion down

In 2024, the system of control of organic production comprised 3,968 agricultural holdings (i.e. those with a certificate or in the process of conversion), or 3% more than in the previous year.
The number of certified holdings increased by 106, or by 3% to 3,455, while the number of agricultural holdings in the process of conversion decreased to 513.

In total, farms included in the system of control of organic production cultivated around 56,800 hectares (around 48,300 hectares with a certificate). For both types of land, we recorded a 4% increase in area compared to 2023. In twenty years, the areas under the organic farming control system have increased by almost two and a half times. Among organically certified land, the largest area was intended for permanent grassland (78% or 44,259 hectares), followed by arable land (15% or 8,618 hectares) and permanent crops (7% or 3,932 hectares).

More cattle and sheep, fewer pigs and goats

In 2024, 40,756 cattle was reared on certified farms, which is 3% more than in the previous year (1,318 more animals). A sharp drop was detected in pigs (by 31% to 1,884 animals). The number of sheep was 5% higher, and of goats 10% lower. About 33,400 of the former and around 6,400 of the latter were reared on organic farms. The number of poultry did not change much compared to the previous year (63,538 animals). A sharp decline was detected in the amount of harvested marine organisms. Shellfish production dropped by 93% to 36 tonnes.

A third more meat from organic farming

The total amount of meat from organic farming weighed 714 tonnes, which is a third more than in 2023. Beef production increased the most (by 36% to 626 tonnes), followed by pork production, which increased by 45% to 58 tonnes. Slightly less meat was produced from other animal categories. Poultry meat weighed around 26 tonnes (a quarter less), sheep meat 3 tonnes (a tenth less) and goat meat 300 kilograms (3% less).

Less milk

On organic farms, 17% less milk was produced compared to 2023, totalling around 8,840 tonnes. Amounts decreased across all types of dairy animals. The amount of cow’s milk, which accounted for 97% of all milk, decreased by 17% to 8,604 tonnes, of goat milk by 40% to 122 tonnes, and of sheep milk by 18% to 117 tonnes.
