Last year, 21,506 residents of Slovenia died, among them slightly more men than women. The mean age at death for men was 75.7 and for women 82.7 years. On average, 1,792 people died per month or 59 per day.

Most men died from neoplasms, most women from diseases of the circulatory system

Since 1991, between 0.9% and 1.0% of Slovenia’s population has died each year, except between 2000 and 2022, when the share was 1.1%. Last year, 21,506 people died, 50.1% of them men and 49.9% women. The mean age at death was 79.2 years: for men 75.7 years and for women 82.7 years. According to the National Institute of Public Health, the most common cause of death for men (36.4%) was neoplasms (cancers), and for women (41.7%) diseases of the circulatory system (cardiovascular diseases). 

6 December 2020, the day with the highest number of deaths 

Last year, on average, 1,792 residents died per month or 59 per day. The highest monthly number (2,104) was recorded in January, and the highest daily number (94) on 8 February. In the history of independent Slovenia, the highest number of deaths in a single day (130) was recorded on 6 December 2020. 

Premature mortality is decreasing

The premature mortality rate shows the share of people under 65 years of age among all who died in a particular year. Last year, it was 13.5% (among men 18.5%, and among women 8.6%). This rate has been decreasing. In 1995, it was 29.5%, among men 40.4%, and among women 18.3%.

On average, the youngest people died in the Pomurska statistical region

Last year, the highest number of deaths per 1,000 residents was recorded in the Pomurska statistical region (13.0) and the lowest in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region (8.4). The national average was 10.1. The premature mortality rate was the highest in Jugovzhodna Slovenia (15.3%) and the lowest in the Primorsko-notranjska region (9.7%). The mean age at death was the highest in the Primorsko-notranjska region (81.3 years) and the lowest in the Pomurska region (77.7 years).

Life expectancy is increasing

Assuming current mortality rates remain unchanged, boys born in Slovenia in 2024 can expect to live 79.5 years, which is 1.5 years more than boys born ten years earlier (78.0 years). Girls born in 2024 can expect to live 84.7 years, exactly one year more than girls born ten years earlier (83.7 years).
