Consumer price indices, January 2025
Annual inflation at 2.0%, monthly at −0.4%
Consumer prices were on average 2.0% higher compared to the previous January. At the monthly level deflation was recorded (−0.4%), which was mainly the result of winter sales of clothing and footwear.
At the annual level prices on average 2.0% higher
In January, consumer prices increased by 2.0% at the annual level. In the same month last year inflation stood at 3.3%.
In one year, service prices increased on average by 3.1% and goods prices by 1.5%. Non-durable goods prices went up by 2.1% and semi-durable goods prices by 1.0%, while durable goods were 0.3% cheaper.
The annual growth rate was pushed up the most (by 0.4 of a percentage point each) by 3.0% higher prices in the group transport and by 2.3% higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages. Higher prices in the group restaurants and hotels (by 4.8%) added 0.3 p.p.
0.2 p.p. each was contributed by higher prices in the groups alcoholic beverages and tobacco (by 3.5%), recreation and culture (by 2.2%) and miscellaneous goods and services (also by 2.2%).
Winter sales pushed monthly inflation down
In January, consumer prices were on average 0.4% lower than a month before.
The monthly price drop was mostly the result of winter sales of clothing and footwear. Clothing prices went down by 10.6%, which contributed 0.5 p.p. to the deflation rate. Footwear was 6.7% cheaper than in the previous month and added 0.1 p.p. Additional 0.1 p.p. was due to 2.9% cheaper package holidays.
On the other hand, in January, compared to the previous month, prices of non-alcoholic beverages (by 3.1%), catering services (by 1.5%) and petroleum products (liquid fuels by 1.2%, petrol by 1.4% and diesel by 0.9%) went up, each contributing 0.1 p.p. to lower monthly deflation.
Harmonised indices of consumer prices
Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, this January the annual growth of consumer prices was 2.3% (a year ago 3.4%). The monthly price growth stood at −0.3%.
In one year, service prices went up on average by 3.8% and goods prices by 1.5%. Non-durable goods prices went up by 2.3% and semi-durable goods prices by 0.4%, while durable goods prices went down by 1.1%.
Annual inflation rates in December 2024 for all EU-27 Member States are available here. Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in December the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 2.4% (a month before 2.2%). In the EU-27 Member States it was 2.7% (a month before 2.5%). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Ireland (1.0%) and the highest in Romania (5.5%); in Slovenia it stood at 2.0%.

METODOLOŠKO OPOZORILO
As in the previous years, weights were changed at the beginning of the year. Weights for the consumer price index are now based on the average of expenditure from the 2022 Household Budget Survey recalculated to December 2024 prices. Weights for the harmonised consumer price index for 2025 are based on the national accounts final data for 2023, also recalculated to December 2024 prices.
