European Statistics Day celebrated for the sixth time

The European Statistics Day has been celebrated every year since 2016, so this year is the sixth time. For several years, the slogan of the European Statistics Day has been “Better Data. Better Lives.”, which emphasises the importance of high-quality data for the functioning of the society and the government.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the large importance of reliable, high-quality and up-to-date data. This is why this year’s European Statistics Day is held under the slogan “Statistics, a vaccine to protect democracy and combat the virus of disinformation”

Response of the Statistical Office to new circumstances

The Slovenian statistical office is well aware of the importance of high-quality and up-to-date official statistical data, particularly in these demanding times. As a response to the exceptional situation, SURS has set up a new survey measuring the impact of COVID-19 in various areas of our daily lives. SURS has set up a new statistical theme on its website called COVID-19, which contains releases with data on the impact of COVID-19 on our economy (e.g. import of protective equipment and medical supplies) and society (e.g. our lives during the epidemic). As a response to increased needs of our users for up-to-date data, SURS started to publish more frequently (monthly) the data on births and deaths, and in the SiStat Database started to publish provisional data on the number of births and deaths by days and months.
SURS adjusted the implementation of data collection to the new situation caused by the spread of COVID-19. Field data collection from individuals and households was made more difficult, so SURS focused even more on online data collection and strengthened telephone interviewing.

It is clear, however, that we could not publish the data without you, individuals and business entities completing our questionnaires. Thank you very much.
