Water accounts, 2024

A lot more water used from the environment than in 2015

In 2024, for own use in economic activities, 101 billion m3 of water was allocated for own use in economic activities or 29 % more water than in 2015, and for distribution from the public water supply 118 million m3 of water or 1% more.

Data on water accounts for 2023 and 2024

We are publishing the water accounts data for 2023 and 2024 on supply and use of water by purpose and by NACE economic activities, as well as on the available water resources in Slovenia.

More water used from surface sources

In 2024, around 132 billion m3 of water was used from the available water sources from the environment, or about a fifth (21%) more than in 2015, when around 109 billion m3 of water was used. Most of this water was used from inland water sources. In terms of water source, the largest share was represented by surface sources (77% or about 4 percentage points more than in 2015), followed by water abstracted from the soil by plants (23% or 4 percentage points less than in 2015). The remaining available amount of water was abstracted from underground sources and from other water sources (0.1% or almost the same as in 2015).

Most water distributed from public water supply intended for households

From the public water supply 118 million m3 of water was allocated for distribution in 2024 (slightly less than in the previous few years). Of this, 77 million m3 of water was intended for households (66%), around 27 million m3 for other activities (23%), 11 million m3 for mining and quarrying, manufacturing and construction activities (9%) and the rest (2%) for other economic activities.

Most abstracted water intended for own use in economic activities

For own use in economic activities, 101 billion m3 of water was allocated, which is comparable to 2016; of this, 748 million m3 of water was used for cooling. In 2024, 29% more water was allocated for own use than in 2015, and 8% more for cooling.

Most water used in electricity supply

Of the water used from surface and underground sources (around 101 billion m3 in 2024), the majority (99.3%) was used to drive turbines in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply. Of this, 748 million m3 or slightly less than 1% was used for cooling in this economic activity. Additional 19 million m3 of water was used for cooling in mining and quarrying, manufacturing and construction.

The balance of available water resources for 2023 negative

The table on the availability of water sources shows the hydrological water balance, or the system of inland water sources, i.e. inflows, outflows and changes in water stocks due to economic activities (abstraction and return of water) and natural processes. The total amount of water returned to the water sources system (increase in stocks) in 2023 (the last available data) was almost 55 billion m3, or 47% more than in 2015 (around 37 billion m3). The total amount of abstracted water (decrease in stocks) was larger than the amount of water returned, almost 56 billion m3, so the change in water stocks was negative at around 1 billion m3 of water. Due to the smaller difference between return and abstraction of water, the change in water stocks in 2023 was smaller than in 2015, when the deficit of water stocks amounted to around 1.3 billion m3.
