Transport of passengers and goods grew the most at airports

After several years of decline, the share of rail goods transport in total inland goods transport grew again last year. Over a tenth more passengers travelled through our international airports in Ljubljana, Maribor and Portorož. 7% fewer passengers arrived at or departed from Slovenian ports.

A tenth more passenger-kilometres performed in railway transport

Almost 16.8 million passengers were carried in railway transport. In comparison with 2023, this is a 6% increase. The total number of passenger-kilometres performed went up by a tenth over the previous year and reached 1,090 million.

More than 1.4 million passengers travelled through Ljubljana, Maribor and Portorož airports, which was 13% more than a year earlier.

142,600 passengers arrived at or departed from Slovenian ports by ship, 7% fewer than in the previous year. Passenger ships had 13,000 passengers, half as many as the year before, and cruise ships 129,000, which was 3% more.

The share of rail goods transport in total inland goods transport higher after several years of decline

Slovenian road goods vehicles carried 100.4 million tonnes of goods or 5% fewer than in 2023: in national transport 65.8 million tonnes or 4% fewer, and in international transport 34.6 million tonnes or 6% fewer. 21.9 billion tonne-kilometres were performed or 3% fewer: in national transport 2.7 billion or 14% fewer, and in international transport 19.2 billion or 1% fewer.

More than 18.4 million tonnes of goods were carried by train and 4,569 million tonne-kilometres were performed. Railway goods transport in tonnes decreased by 4% and in tonne-kilometres by 1% over the previous year. The share of rail goods transport in total inland goods transport was 27.6%, 1.1 percentage point higher than the year before.The indicator value turned upward after several years of decline.



In 2024, almost 22 million tonnes of goods were handled in the Port of Koper, which was 3% more than in the previous year. Of this, almost 16 million tonnes were unloaded and 6 million tonnes were loaded. The largest traffic in terms of goods by type was with containers, as just over 9 million tonnes were handled.

Compared to a year earlier, airport goods traffic went up by 9% to 12,393 tonnes.

Growth of goods vehicles transport largest at road border crossings with Italy

77.5 million passenger vehicles entered or exited Slovenia at road border crossings last year: 32.9 million at border crossings with Croatia, 21.3 million with Austria, 20.7 million with Italy and 2.6 million with Hungary. At the annual level, total traffic of passenger vehicles grew by 1%.

18 million goods vehicles entered or exited Slovenia at road border crossings, which was 5% more than in 2023. Of all goods vehicles, 36% were recorded at border crossings with Croatia, 27% with Italy, 25% with Austria and 11% with Hungary. The largest increase in traffic was recorded at border crossings with Italy (by 14%), and the largest decline at the border with Hungary (by 11%).

More road motor vehicles and more vehicle kilometres

At the end of 2024, there were almost 1.8 million registered road motor vehicles, 2% more than the year before. National vehicles performed 22.8 billion vehicle kilometres on national and foreign road territory. In one year the volume of traffic of national vehicles went up by 2%. On average 13,435 kilometres were driven by a national passenger car.

The volume of traffic also increased on the Slovenian road network. National and foreign road motor vehicles performed 22 billion vehicle kilometres, or 3% more than the year before.

The renewal rate of passenger car fleet the highest in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region

The share of first registrations of new private passenger cars among all registered private passenger cars in 2024 was 4.2%, 0.3 of a percentage point higher than a year earlier. The renewal rate of passenger cars (passenger car fleet) was the highest in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region (6.7%), where it also increased the most in one year (by 0.6 of a percentage point).

Goriška with on average over 13 years old vehicle fleet

In 2024, Slovenia recorded the highest motorization rate (587 registered private passenger cars per 1,000 population) and on average the oldest cars (11.3 years) so far. Goriška was the statistical region with the highest motorisation rate (657), and on average the oldest private passenger cars (13.1 years).

In Goriška on average the oldest also first-time registered used private passenger cars

Last year, used private passenger cars registered for the first time in Slovenia, i.e. those that had already been registered outside of Slovenia, were on average 5.8 years old. Since 2008, their average age at the first registration in Slovenia has increased by 1.2 years.

The indicator average age of first-time registered used private passenger cars is for the first time published also by cohesion and statistical regions. In 2024, these cars were on average the youngest in the Koroška and Savinjska statistical regions (5.5 years) and the oldest in the Goriška statistical region (6.4 years).
