Public water supply, 2024
Less water abstracted for public water supply, both households and businesses consumed less
In 2024, 7.6% less water than a year earlier was abstracted for the public water supply, almost all of it (98%) from groundwater sources. Households consumed 5.6% less water, and production and service activities 6.5% less.
Slightly less water abstracted
In total, 169 million m3 of water were abstracted in Slovenia in 2024, which is 7.6% less than in the previous year. 166 million m3 of water (or 7.2% less) were abstracted from groundwater – of which 56 million m3–, and 3 million m3 (or 21% less) from surface water.
The amount of water abstracted from the Danube river basin went down by about 3.4% and from the Adriatic Sea river basin by 27.0%.
Households and businesses consumed less
Households consumed 77.4 million m3 of water from the public water supply or 5.6% less than in the previous year, while business entities consumed 40 million m3 of water or 6.5% less.
5.2 million m3 of water were supplied but uncharged (water from hydrants, water for firefighting, water for cleaning roads, etc.), which is 13% more than the year before, and 46.6 million m3 of water were lost as a result of the rehabilitation of water supply networks, which is 13.2% less.
Slightly more connections to the water supply network
The entire water supply network in 2024 was 44,848 kilometres long. Compared to the end of the previous year, the number of connections increased by 1.2% to 580,580.
