Areas of field products, 2025

The area of arable land has not changed significantly since last year

This year, around 173,600 hectares of arable land were sown with crops, about the same as last year. More than half was intended for cultivation of cereals for grain (57%), and almost a third for green fodder crops (30%).

  • provisional data
Area sown with cereals slightly larger

According to provisional data, this year about the same area was sown with cereals for grain (1% more) as in the previous year, totalling around 99,300 hectares. The area increased for almost all cereals, both bread and fodder cereals.

Wheat was sown on 27,664 hectares, the same as in the previous year, while the area sown with spelt increased by almost a fifth (19%), covering almost 400 hectares. The area sown with rye and maslin increased by 10% to almost 1,180 hectares in total.

The area sown with buckwheat and millet was slightly smaller. Buckwheat as the main crop was in bloom on 431 hectares and millet on 154 hectares. Most buckwheat in Slovenia is sown as a subsequent crop, so we expect that its area will increase significantly by the end of the year, when subsequent crops are also taken into account in the statistics.

Fodder cereals were cultivated on around 69,700 hectares. More than 60% of fodder cereals was maize for grain, which was sown on about 43,000 hectares, a 3% larger area than in the previous year. Barley was sown on 20,400 hectares, a 2% smaller area than in 2024. We recorded an increase in the area of triticale (by 7%) and oats (by 3%); the former was sown on around 5,200 hectares, and the latter on almost 790 hectares.

Again less root crops

Root crops were sown on around 2,900 hectares of arable land, 5% less compared to the previous year. Potato was planted on 2,831 hectares, a 1% smaller area than in 2024. A 9% smaller area was sown with fodder foot crops (fodder beets, kohlrabi and carrots), in total around 48 hectares. The largest decrease was recorded in the area sown with sugar beet, which was sown on only 38 hectares, dropping to only about a quarter (26%) of the area sown with sugar beet in the previous year.

Slightly larger area of oil crops

The area sown with oil crops increased by 2% in total, to around 11,400 hectares. Larger differences were detected among individual oil crops. The area sown with soy increased the most; it was sown on 4,760 hectares, or 14% more than in the previous year. The area sown with oil pumpkins increased by 2% to 3,842 hectares and the area of other oil crops (mustard, poppy, sesame, flax for oil) by 18% to almost 40 hectares in total. Other oil crops were sown on smaller areas: rape and turnip-rape by 16%, on 2,146 hectares, sunflowers by 7%, on 528 hectares, and hemp for oil by almost a quarter (24%), on 86 hectares.

Area of green fodder crops slightly smaller

The area of green fodder from arable land (52,609 hectares) was slightly smaller (by 2%) than in the previous year. Silage maize was sown on a similar area as in 2024, in total on 27,365 hectares. A decrease in area was detected for clovers (by 21% to 1,349 hectares) and lucerne (by 16% to 2,052 hectares). A smaller area was recorded also by grasses and grass-clover mixtures. Grasses, either in pure sowing or in grass mixtures, were cultivated on around 9,400 hectares (by 3% less) and grass-clover mixtures on 6,160 hectares (by 7% less). The area of clover-grass mixtures increased by 4% compared to 2024 to about 5,800 hectares.

Hops cultivated on a slightly smaller area than last year

Hops was produced on 1,609 hectares, a 3% smaller area than in 2024. The largest areas of hop fields are located in the Savinjska statistical region (74%), followed by Koroška (15%) and Podravska (11%).

Large drop in fallow land

The area of fallow land – which includes fields that were intentionally not used for cultivation this year or were sown with crops that were ploughed for green manure and the harvest was not collected – decreased by 27% compared to last year, amounting to around 1,030 hectares. Fallow land is part of the crop rotation and refers to arable land that is not used for growing agricultural crops for a certain period, at least one year. Fields that were left uncultivated due to non-agricultural reasons, i.e. economic, social, or other reasons, are not considered fallow.
