Nearly a fifth of total population in the two largest settlements
On 1 January 2025, 56 settlements were unpopulated. Almost a half of all settlements had fewer than 100 residents.
The largest number of unpopulated settlements in municipality Kočevje
On 1 January 2025, there were 6,035 settlements in Slovenia, 56 of them unpopulated. The number of unpopulated settlements was the largest in municipality Kočevje (16), followed by municipality Kostel (6).
Many settlements are small
A quarter of all settlements had fewer than 50 residents, and almost a half had under 100 residents. A further quarter of all settlements had 100–199 residents.
Ljubljana in the municipality of the same name had the largest number of residents: almost 291,000 or as many as over 4,000 of the least populated settlements combined. More than 18% of Slovenia’s population lived in the two largest settlements (Ljubljana and Maribor).
A few settlements with no children or no elderly
Seven settlements with at least 30 residents had no residents under 15 years of age. The largest such settlement was Kančevci in municipality Moravske Toplice, with a population of 49, but no residents younger than 15.
There were three settlements with at least 30 residents without residents aged 65 or older. The largest one was Gabrje pri Ilovi Gori in municipality Grosuplje with 44 residents.
