More cows’ milk collected than last September
More cows’ milk was collected from agricultural holdings this September than a year ago as well as in the first nine months of this year than in the same period last year. Dairies decreased the production of drinking milk and butter, and increased the production of cheese, cream and acidified milk.
Quantity of collected milk higher year-on-year
Registered purchasers collected about 44,400 tonnes of cows’ milk. This was 4.1% less than in August, but 2.9% more than in September 2023. In the first nine months, the amount of milk purchased was 0.2% higher than last year in the same period.
Much lower production of drinking milk
Dairies produced around 9,400 tonnes of drinking milk in September. This was the lowest monthly quantity in the last 24 years. They produced almost 16% less drinking milk than a year ago. Butter production decreased by more than 12%. On the other hand, dairies increased the production of cream, acidified milk and cheese by around 6%.
At the monthly level, less drinking milk and significantly more butter
Compared to August, dairies also decreased the production of drinking milk the most (by more than 22%). Cheese production was lower by 7% and cream production by more than 3%. On the other hand, almost 45% more butter and almost 3% more acidified milk was produced.
In the first nine months, higher production of cheese and lower production of drinking milk
Dairies produced almost 11% more cheese, around 9% more cream and almost 8% more acidified milk than last year between January and September. On the other hand, drinking milk production decreased by almost 6% and butter production by more than 2%.
In the EU, less milk collected this August
Dairies in the EU collected 1.4% less cows’ milk than last August. The quantity of collected milk increased the most in Poland, France and Austria, while dairies in Germany collected more than 5% less milk (147,000 tonnes less).
More dairy products in the EU in the first eight months, except for butter and milk powder
From January to August, dairies in the EU mostly produced more dairy products than in the same period last year. The production of cream and acidified milk increased by around 4% each, of cheese by 3% and of drinking milk by almost 1%. On the other hand, more than 2% less butter and more than 1% less milk powder was produced.
The price of raw milk up in August
In August, the price of raw milk in the EU increased by 2.2% to EUR 0.474/kg. In September, the price is expected to increase further, while in October it is expected to stabilise.
