Tourism travels of domestic population, 2nd quarter 2024

More than two million tourist trips in spring

In the observed period, residents of Slovenia aged 15 or more went on 2.1 million tourist trips, 1.9 million of them private. Half of private trips made abroad were to Croatia.

Three fifths of private trips made abroad

In April, May or June, 798,000 Slovenian residents (45%) aged 15 or more made at least one tourist trip (private and/or business). That was 4 percentage points more than in the same period of the previous year.

According to the level of education, the largest share of those who travelled completed upper secondary education (47%), while the lowest share was among those who completed basic education or less (13%). Depending on their status, employed and self-employed travelled the most (68%), followed by retirees (19%).

In the observed period, 763,000 residents of Slovenia (43%) went on a private trip. During this period, around 1.9 million private trips were made, 60% of them abroad. Among private trips abroad, the most popular destination was Croatia (50%), followed by Italy (11%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (9%) and Austria (7%).

Non-rented accommodations dominated in Slovenia, rented abroad

Around 6.7 million overnight stays were generated on private trips, almost three quarters (74%) of them abroad. In total, 10% more overnight stay were generated than in the same period last year.

In the selected period, private trips in Slovenia lasted on average 2.2 overnight stays, while those abroad were almost twice as long (4.3 nights). Residents spent on private trips on average EUR 90 per day. Daily expenses on private trips in Slovenia amounted to EUR 64 per person per day and abroad to EUR 99 per person per day.

The largest share of tourists on private trips in Slovenia preferred to stay with their relatives and friends (42%), followed by own holiday home (23%). Abroad, they preferred to stay in hotels and similar accommodations (26%), followed by private rooms, dwellings, etc. (25%).

A million residents did not travel privately in spring

Of those who did not make a private trip in April, May or June, 27% were deterred by lack of free time. Over a quarter of domestic tourists stated household finance, 19% health reasons, while 18% did not feel the need to travel.

45% of residents on a same-day visit in Slovenia

In the 2nd quarter, 45% of domestic tourists made at least one same-day visit (private and/or business) in Slovenia. Slovenian residents generated around 2.7 million same-day visits, 86% of them private. On average, they spent EUR 77 per person, mostly for food and drink in cafes and restaurants, and for transport.
