Milk and milk products, October 2023
The quantity of collected milk still lower than last year
Compared to October 2022, 3% less milk was collected from agricultural holdings. Dairies decreased the production of drinking milk and butter, and increased the production of cream, cheese and acidified milk.
In October, too, less milk collected
The amount of milk collected in October decreased by 3% compared to a year ago. Compared to the previous month, the quantity of collected milk went up by 2.7%, while the total quantity of milk collected in the first ten months of this year remained 2.6% lower than in the same period last year as around 12,700 tonnes less cows’ milk was collected.
At the monthly level, dairies increased production, except of butter and drinking milk
Dairies produced over 23% more cream, around 12% more cheese, 7% more acidified milk and 2% more milk powder. The production of butter, on the other hand, decreased by more than 9% and of drinking milk by almost 4%.
More acidified milk, cream and cheese, and less butter, drinking milk and milk powder than a year ago
In recent months, we have been noticing a considerable increase in the production of acidified milk. In October 2023, dairies produced almost 4,600 tonnes of acidified milk, which is a more than 22% increase over October 2022. Dairies also produced almost 9% more cream and over 6% more cheese. The production of other milk products decreased: of milk powder by almost 36%, of butter by almost 19% and of drinking milk by more than 8%.
In the first ten months, lower production of all milk products, except acidified milk
From January to October, Slovenian dairies produced more than 7% more acidified milk products than in the same period last year. The production of other groups of milk products decreased: cream by almost 5%, cheese and butter by around 4%, and drinking milk by around 3%. They also produced almost 47% less milk powder.
Average price of raw milk in the EU continues to fall
In the first nine months, dairies in the EU collected 0.5% more cows’ milk than in the same period last year, and increased the production of milk products, with the exception of whole milk powder. Compared to last September, they collected 0.8% less milk. This decrease is due to a strong decrease in collected milk in France (minus 88,000 tonnes or almost 5%). The average price of raw milk in the EU decreased for the ninth consecutive month, but the decrease was lower than in the previous month (this time by 0.2% to EUR 0.435 per kg). The milk price is expected to increase slightly in October.
