In 2021, 50% more foreign tourists arrivals in Slovenia than in 2020
Tourism in Slovenia was, mostly in the first half of 2021, still stunted due to the COVID-19 epidemic. 85% of tourist overnight stays were therefore generated in the second half of the year.
In 2021, 11.3 million tourist overnight stays
In 2021, just over 4 million tourist arrivals (31% more than in 2020) and 11.3 million overnight stays (22% more than in 2020) were recorded in tourist accommodation establishments in Slovenia.
While domestic tourists generated almost 2.2 million arrivals (17% more than in 2020) and almost 6.5 million overnight stays (10% more than in 2020), foreign tourists generated 1.8 million arrivals (51% more than in 2020) and almost 4.8 million overnight stays (43% more than in 2020).
Most tourist overnight stays generated in the second half of the year
As the measures to combat the COVID-19 epidemic in Slovenia were eased, tourism started to recover in June. 9.6 million tourist overnight stays (85% of all tourist overnight stays in 2021) were thus generated in the second half of the year. Foreign tourists generated more overnight stays than domestic only in August, which was also the month with the most tourist overnight stays in 2021.
Most foreign tourists came from Germany
In 2021, the most overnight stays of foreign tourists in Slovenia were recorded by tourists from Germany. They generated more than 1 million overnights (22% of all foreign tourist overnight stays in 2021 or 32% more than in 2020), the most in municipality Bovec (about 152,300).
They were followed by tourists from Austria (9% of all foreign tourist overnight stays or 16% more), Italy (7% of all foreign tourist overnight stays or 3% fewer), Czechia (7% of all foreign tourist overnight stays or 156% more) and the Netherlands (7% of all foreign tourist overnight stays or 103% more).
More tourist overnight stays in all types of municipalities, the highest growth in municipality Ljubljana
In 2021, the highest number of overnight stays was recorded in mountain resorts, 3.3 million (30% of all overnight stays). They were followed by seaside resorts, where almost 2.7 million overnight stays were recorded (24% of all overnight stays). In health (spa) resorts 2.5 million overnight stays were recorded (23% of all overnight stays). 1.2 million overnight stays were recorded in the group of other municipalities (11% of all overnight stays), just over 866,000 in municipality Ljubljana and about 585,300 in urban municipalities.
While domestic tourists generated the most overnight stays in health (spa) resorts (33% of domestic overnight stays), foreign tourists generated the most overnight stays in mountain resorts (40% of foreign overnight stays).
Municipality Piran still first in terms of tourist overnight stays
In 2021, tourists generated the most overnight stays in municipality Piran (1.5 million). Almost 2.8 million overnight stays were generated in the Obalno-kraška statistical region, which is the most among all statistical regions.
While domestic tourists generated most of their overnight stays in municipalities Piran, Brežice and Izola, foreign tourists generated most of their overnight stays in municipalities Ljubljana, Piran and Bled.
Hotels still the most popular accommodation establishments
The most tourist overnight stays in 2021 were recorded in hotels, more than 4.5 million overnight stays (40% of all overnight stays in 2021). In addition, over a million tourist overnight stays were recorded in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (2.7 million overnight stays or 24% of all overnight stays) and in camping sites (1.8 million overnight stays or 16% of all overnight stays).
They were followed by apartment settlements with approximately 303,800 tourist overnight stays. Only in this type of accommodation establishments fewer overnights stays were recorded than in 2020 (by 15%).
Tourist farms with accommodation recorded almost 303,300 overnight stays, which is 21% more than in 2020 and 20% more than in record-breaking 2019.
Almost the same number of permanent bedplaces in accommodation establishments available to tourists as in 2020
More than 160,000 permanent bedplaces were available to tourists in 2021; almost one fourth (39,500) in hotels, which is 3% fewer than in 2020. 30% were available in private accommodations – rented rooms, dwellings (approximately the same as in 2020) and 18% in camping sites (3% more than in 2020).
