Positive net migration of the tertiary educated in 2020
In 2020 the educational structure of emigrants was similar to that of the entire population of Slovenia. Employment was the top reason to immigrate for foreign citizens.
Emigrants’ education similar to that of the entire population of Slovenia
36,110 people immigrated to Slovenia in 2020; nearly two thirds of them were aged 25–64. Among these, nearly 24% had basic education or less, 56% had upper secondary education and 21% had tertiary education.
In the same year 17,745 people emigrated from Slovenia; 70% of them were aged 25–64. Among them, just under 21% had basic education or less, 61% had upper secondary education and 19% had tertiary education.
45% of immigrants with Slovenian citizenship aged 25–64 had tertiary education, while among foreign immigrants the share of tertiary educated was significantly lower: 12%. Among emigrants in the same age group, the difference was very similar: 40% of emigrants with Slovenian citizenship had tertiary education, while about 10 % of foreign emigrants were tertiary educated.
The education structures of Slovenian and foreign citizens (aged 25–64) who emigrated in 2020 were similar to the education structures of these two groups among the population of the same age.
Among those who immigrated to Slovenia in 2020, 313 held a doctorate of science; among emigrants, 137 had attained this level of education.
Employment top reason to immigrate for foreign citizens
Out of the 24,750 foreign immigrants to Slovenia in 2020, the most came to Slovenia to work (58%). Many also immigrated to join their family members (31%), whereas other reasons (e.g. to study) were less common.
Among Slovenian citizens (aged 25–64) who immigrated to Slovenia in 2020, 50% were employed at the end of the year. Among foreign immigrants of the same age, 71% were employed. 42% of Slovenian citizens (aged 25–64) who emigrated in 2020 were employed prior to emigration, as were 78% foreign emigrants. For comparison: on 1 January 2021, 75% of all population of Slovenia (aged 25–64) were employed.
