In Slovenia inflation is measured with the consumer price index with which we measure changes in retail prices of goods and services from the point of view of the expenditure structure, which the resident population intends for final consumption at home and abroad.

World Environment Day
In 2021, the amount of plastic waste generated in Slovenia was 1% lower than a year earlier. Mineral fertilisers used in agriculture contained 3.7% less main plant nutrients than in 2020. Most food waste (52.6%) was generated by households. For irrigation, 2.1% less water was used than in 2020.

Total market production slightly up
In March, the total market production was higher at the monthly level, at the annual level and at the level of the 1st quarter. All observed activities contributed to the growth at the monthly level.

Prices up annually by 8.4%, monthly by 1.1%
In one year, prices were on average higher by 8.4%. Annual inflation was influenced the most by 14.7% higher prices of food. Monthly inflation was at 1.1%, mainly due to higher prices of tobacco (by 4.5%), package holidays (by 4.2%) and food (by 1.1%).

In June 2023, the monthly and annual base interest lower
The monthly base interest rate in June 2023 fell to 0.7%, the annual base interest rate also fell to 8.86%.

Lower production of drinking milk, cream and milk powder
In April, 2.5% less milk was collected from agricultural holdings than a year ago. Drinking milk production again decreased by over 2,000 tonnes. Compared to March 2023, dairies decreased the production of all groups of milk products except cheese.

More meat gained than in the previous month
About 3,802,000 poultry, 18,000 pigs and 11,000 cattle were slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses in March 2023. In this way, about 6,500 tonnes of poultry meat, 1,700 tonnes of pig meat, and 3,100 tonnes of bovine meat was gained.

Import prices lower than in the previous month
In April 2023 import prices were 1.2% lower than in the previous month and 0.6% higher than a year ago. On a monthly basis, we recorded the most noticeable decrease in the group electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning (11.4%).

The total volume of sales unchanged at the monthly level
The total volume of sales in service activities and trade production remained unchanged compared to the previous month. The biggest change was recorded in real estate activities.

Unemployment rate remains under 4%, the number of unemployed down by 14%
In the 1st quarter of 2023, there were slightly fewer unemployed persons than in the same period of 2022 and slightly more than in the previous quarter. There were also fewer employed persons than in previous periods. Among the latter, 1.3% were underemployed.

Retail trade turnover down
Volume turnover in retail trade in April 2023 was lower at both the monthly and the annual level. In trade and repair of motor vehicles, it was again higher in both comparisons.
