Livestock slaughter in slaughterhouses, Slovenia, September 2021

In September 2021, about 7% more meat was gained in Slovene slaughterhouses than a month before

About 3,526,000 poultry, about 20,000 pigs and about 11,000 cattle were slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses in September 2021. In this way, Slovene slaughterhouses gained about 6,500 tons of poultry meat, about 1,700 tons of pig meat and about 3,300 tons of bovine meat.

In September 2021, more animals slaughtered than in the previous month, except pigs and poultry

Compared to the previous month, the number of slaughtered cattle went up by about 33% (i.e. about 3,000 animals), of sheep by about 21% (i.e. about 200 animals) and of horses by about 13% (i.e. about 10 animals). On the other hand, the number of slaughtered pigs went down compared to the previous month by about 3% (i.e. about 1,000 animals) and of poultry by about 1% (i.e. about 42,000 animals).

The total carcass weight of animals slaughtered in September 2021 more or less followed the trends in the number of animals slaughtered. At the monthly level, the total carcass weight of slaughtered cattle went up by exactly 30% (weight difference of about 765,000 kg), of sheep by about 28% (weight difference of about 3,000 kg) and of horses by about 11% (weight difference of about 2,000 kg). In the same comparison, the number of slaughtered poultry remained about the same, but with a positive trend (i.e. about 16,000 kg more). On the other hand, the total carcass weight of pigs went down by about 3% (weight difference of about 50,000 kg).

In September 2021, more animals slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses than in September 2020

Compared to September 2020, the number of sheep slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses in September 2021 went up by about 32%, of cattle by about 7% and of poultry by about 3%. The number of slaughtered pigs remained at about the same level, but with a negative trend, while the number of slaughtered horses went down by about 4%.

Compared to September 2020, the total carcass weight of sheep slaughtered in September 2021 went up by about 39%, of poultry by about 5% and of cattle by about 4%. The total weight of dressed carcasses of pigs remained about the same, but with a negative trend, while the total weight of dressed carcasses of horses went down by exactly 2%.


In September 2021, we recorded slaughter of 11 cattle imported from Italy and Czechia. The total weight of dressed carcasses was about 2 tons. There was no record of slaughter of imported pigs or poultry in September 2021 in Slovene slaughterhouses.
