In October 2021, annual growth of consumer prices 3%, at the monthly level 0.9%

Annual growth was pushed up the most by higher prices of petroleum products, whereas monthly inflation was mostly due to higher prices of clothing and footwear.

In one year, prices on average higher by 3%

In October 2021, the annual growth of consumer prices was 3%. In October 2020, the price growth was negative, –0.1%. The 12-month average price growth was 1% (in the same period last year it was 0.4%).

In one year, goods and service prices increased on average by 4.1% and 1.1%, respectively. As regards goods, non-durable and durable goods prices increased by 5.3% and 4.6%, respectively, while semi-durable goods prices decreased by 0.8%.

In October 2021, the largest upward impact on the annual inflation (1.6 percentage points) came from higher prices of petroleum products (diesel prices went up by 39.8%, liquid fuel prices by 39% and petrol prices by 31.7%). Additional 0.3 p. p. each came from higher prices of heat energy (by 44.1%), catering services (by 5.9%) and motor cars (by 5.6%).

The annual inflation was pushed down by 0.2 p.p. each by 5.6% lower prices of package holidays and by 3.5% lower prices of communication.

Monthly inflation at 0.9%

In October 2021, consumer prices were on average 0.9% higher than a month before.

The largest upward impact on the monthly inflation (0.5 p.p.) was due to the seasonal change of garments and footwear collection, as prices in this group increased on average by 7.3%. 0.3 p.p. was added by higher prices of petroleum products. Liquid fuel prices increased by 7.7%, diesel prices by 7.5% and petrol prices by 3.9%. Additional 0.1 p.p. each came from higher prices of heat energy (by 12.1%), fresh or chilled fruit (by 7.2%), gas (5.3%) and new motor cars (by 2.7%). Other price increases in October added additional 0.2 p.p.

On the other hand, the monthly price increase was reduced by 0.2 p.p. due to lower prices of package holidays (by 7%). Additional 0.1 p.p. each came from lower prices of hire of garages, parking spaces and personal transport equipment (by 13.4%), meat (by 2%) and telephone and telefax equipment (by 1.3%).

Harmonised indices of consumer prices

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in October 2021 the annual growth of consumer prices was 3.5% (in October 2020 it was −0.5%). The 12-month average price growth was 1% (in the same period last year 0.2%). The monthly price growth was 1.1%.

On average, goods prices went up by 4.5% compared to October 2020 and service prices by 1.5%. As regards goods, the prices of non-durable goods went up by 6% and of durable goods by 4.5%, while semi-durable goods prices went down by 0.7%.

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in September 2021 the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 3.4% (in August 2021 it was 3%). In the EU-27 Member States it was 3.6% (up from 3.2% in August 2021). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Malta (0.7%) and the highest in Estonia and Lithuania (both 6.4%); in Slovenia it stood at 2.7%.
