Enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija with lower digital intensity index

In 2021, 48% of enterprises with at least 10 employees and self-employed have a very low digital intensity index in Vzhodna Slovenija and 40% in Zahodna Slovenija. On the other hand, 4% of enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija and 6% in Zahodna Slovenija have a very high digital intensity index.

In the Digital Compass, the European Commission has set a vision for the digital transformation of Europe by 2030. In the digital transformation of enterprises, it has set a target that 75% of enterprises in the EU will be purchasing cloud computing services, use artificial intelligence technologies and big data by 2030. More than 90% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are expected to reach at least a basic level of digital intensity. 

In 2021, 43% of enterprises with at least 10 employees and self-employed purchase cloud computing services in Slovenia, and 14% use artificial intelligence technologies. In 2019, 7% of enterprises analysed big data. Among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), 45% have a very low, 32% low, 19% high and 4% very high digital intensity index. 55% of small and medium-sized enterprises have reached at least a basic level of digital intensity.

The rate of digitization of enterprises with at least 10 employees and self-employed is monitored by the digital intensity index, which consists of 12 indicators used to monitor the use of ICT in enterprises in an individual year. According to the number of elements they meet, enterprises are classified into four groups: enterprises with a very low, low, high and very high digital intensity index. 

Almost half of enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija with very low digital intensity index

In 2021, most enterprises with at least 10 employees and the self-employed have a very low digital intensity index (44%). 31% of enterprises have a low digital intensity index, 20% high and 5% very high digital intensity index. A review by cohesion regions shows that 48% of enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija have a very low digital intensity index and 4% a very high digital intensity index. In Zahodna Slovenija, 40% of enterprises have a very low and 6% a very high digital intensity index.



Indicators about the usage of information-communication technologies in enterprises with at least 10 employees and self-employed for monitoring the digital intensity index in 2021: 

More than half of employees and self-employed have access to the Internet for business purposes

In half of enterprises more than half of employees and self-employed have access to the Internet for business purposes. As regards the enterprise size, 50% of small and medium-sized enterprises and 58% of large enterprises.

More than half of employees and self-employed have access to the Internet for business purposes in 42% of enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija and 58% of enterprises in Zahodna Slovenija.

Maximum contracted download speed of the fastest fixed Internet connection is at least 30 Mbit/s

79% of enterprises have a maximum contracted downloaded speed of the fastest fixed Internet connection at least 30 Mbit/s. 9% of enterprises have a speed of at least 1 Gbit/s. 

In Vzhodna Slovenija 78% and in Zahodna Slovenija 80% of enterprises have a maximum contracted download speed of the fastest fixed Internet connection at least 30 Mbit/s. 

Enterprises use software package ERP

ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), a software package that enables comprehensive business management, is used by 36% of enterprises. As regards the enterprises size, 28% of small, 65% of medium-sized and 97% of large enterprises.

Software package ERP is used by 33% of enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija and 38% of enterprises in Zahodna Slovenija.

Enterprises use software for managing information about customers (CRM)

CRM (Customer Relationship Management) for managing information about customers is used by 22% of enterprises: 18% of small, 35% of medium-sized and 62% of large enterprises.

In Vzhodna Slovenija 17% and in Zahodna Slovenija 27% of enterprises use CRM.

Enterprises use social media

59% of enterprises use social media (have a profile). 57% of enterprises use social networks (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn), 29% multimedia content sharing websites (e.g. Instagram, YouTube), 11% have their own blog or microblog (e.g. Twitter) and 4% use Wiki based knowledge sharing tools. Social media are used by 56% of small, 68% of medium-sized and 90% of large enterprises.

In Vzhodna Slovenija, social media are used by 56% of enterprises and in Zahodna Slovenija by 62%.

Enterprises use two or more social media

Two or more social media are used (have a profile) by 30% of enterprises. As regards the size, 26% of small, 43% of medium-sized and 74% of large enterprises.

In Vzhodna Slovenija, two or more social media are used by 26% of enterprises and in Zahodna Slovenija by 34%.

Enterprises use artificial intelligence technologies

12% of enterprises use artificial intelligence technologies: 9% of small, 20% of medium-sized and 36% of large enterprises. The most often used artificial intelligence technologies are technologies for identifying objects or persons (e.g. computer vision, machine vision, video analytics) that based on a picture identify a product, a fingerprint, a face or an object (by 8% of enterprises). 

Artificial intelligence technologies are used by 9% of enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija and by 15% of enterprises in Zahodna Slovenija.

Usage of internet of things (smart devices or systems) in enterprises

49% of enterprises use smart devices or systems: 46% of small, 61% of medium-sized and 78% of large enterprises.

Smart devices or systems are most often used for premises' security, e.g. smart alarm systems, smart smoke detectors, smart door locks, smart security cameras (38% of enterprises). 19% of enterprises use them for energy consumption management, e.g. smart-meters, smart-lights, smart-thermostats, 18% for logistics management, e.g. sensors that are monitored/controlled via the Internet for tracking products or vehicles in warehouse management, 12% for production processes, e.g. sensors or RFID tags that are monitored/controlled via the Internet and used to monitor or automate the process.

Smart devices or systems are used by 52% of enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija and by 47% in Zahodna Slovenija.

Enterprises purchasing cloud computing services

43% of enterprises purchase cloud computing services: 39% of small, 55% of medium-sized and 81% of large enterprises. 

Enterprises purchase among others the following cloud computing services: 31% of enterprises e-mail, 28% services for the storage of files in the cloud, 12% computing power to run enterprise's own software.

Cloud computing services are purchased by 38% of enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija and by 47% in Zahodna Slovenija.

Enterprises purchase sophisticated or intermediate cloud computing services

38% of enterprises purchase at least one of the sophisticated or intermediate cloud computing services: 35% of small, 46% of medium-sized and 65% of large enterprises. These services are: security software applications over the cloud (31%), hosting the enterprise database (18%), finance or accounting software applications (16%), purchase of software package ERP over the cloud (11%), computing platform providing a hosted environment for application development, testing or deployment (e.g. reusable software modules, application programming interfaces – APIs) (10%) and customer relationship management (CRM) over the cloud (9%).

Sophisticated or intermediate cloud computing services are purchased by 32% of enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija and by 43% in Zahodna Slovenija.

Enterprises generated at least 1% of their turnover in the previous year via computer networks – with orders via websites or via electronic data interchange (EDI)

In 2020, 20% of enterprises generated at least 1% of their turnover with orders via computer networks (website or EDI-type messages). Regarding the enterprises size, 18% of small, 25% of medium-sized and 53% of large enterprises.

In 2020, enterprises generated via computer networks 17.9% of their turnover (excluding VAT), 4.1% via websites and 13.7% via computer networks (EDI).

In Vzhodna Slovenija, 19% of enterprises generated at least 1% of their turnover in the previous year via computer networks – with orders via websites or via electronic data interchange (EDI). The share in Zahodna Slovenija was 21%.

Enterprises generated more than 1% of their turnover via web sales and more than 10% of their web sales to private customers

In 2020, 8% of enterprises generated more than 1% of their turnover in the previous year with web sales and at the same time web sales to private customers represented more than 10% of their web sales (7% of small enterprises, 8% of medium-sized and 12% of large enterprises).

There were 6% of such enterprises in Vzhodna Slovenija and 9% of enterprises in Zahodna Slovenija.

Enterprises generated in 2020 4.1% of their turnover (excluding VAT) with web sales.

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
The published data are estimates derived from the survey on the sample that represents enterprises with at least 10 employees and self-employed persons. Enterprise can be comprised of one or more legal units. In 2021, enterprises in activity 75 – Veterinary activities were also included in the survey. Therefore, the data are not comparable with the results from previous years, as this has led to a break in the time series of data.

When monitoring the digitalization by region, we must take into account that various factors affect the activity of enterprises active in a particular region. Large enterprises can have business units operating in both cohesion regions, yet the data on the use of ICT can only be attributed to the parent enterprise.
