1,755 live births and 1,503 deaths in August 2021

According to provisional data for August 2021, 1,755 children were born and 1,503 people died in Slovenia. From January to August 2021, August was the month with the most live births and fewest deaths.

Slightly more live births than in August 2020

According to provisional data for August  2021, 1,755 children were born (18 more than in August 2020) and the most from the beginning of the year 2021. On average 57 children were born per day (56 in August 2020). In the summer months usually most children are born.

Fewer deaths than in
August 2020

According to provisional data for August 2021, 1,503 people died. This is the fewest this year, namely 1,132 (43%) less than in January 2021 when the most people died, and 121 (7.5%) less than in August 2020.  
On average 48 people died each day in August 2021 (52 people per day died on average in August 2020, 85 in January 2021).

Excess mortality

Excess mortality (i.e. excess number of deaths compared to the average number of deaths in the same periods in the past) in August 2021 was –4.1%. This means that 4.1% fewer people died in August 2021 than on an average August in the 2015–2019 period.

Excess mortality of the population aged 75 or more

According to provisional data, 993 people aged 75 or more died in Slovenia in August 2021 (66.1% of all deaths). The number of deceased in August 2021 at that age was 1.3% higher than the average number of deceased of the same age in 2015–2019.

What do data for September 2021 show us?

According to the first estimate, 1,083 people died between 1 and 19 September 2021. In the same period of 2020, 1,077 people died.
Provisional data for September 2021 will be published on 8 November 2021.

Data publication

In response to the increased needs of users for up-to-date data, the Statistical Office started to publish monthly data on deaths and live births by days. In the SiStat Database, the already existing tables on live births and deaths by days are being updated monthly.

Eurostat continuously publishes provisional data on the number of deaths by weeks by countries. Slovenia provides provisional data monthly.

The National Institute of Public Health is publishing daily changes in the number of deaths with COVID-19.
