In 2020, the ICT sector increased its turnover, value added and the number of persons employed

In 2020, the ICT sector was comprised of 9,038 enterprises that employed 29,985 persons, and generated EUR 4,547 million of turnover and EUR 1,795 million of value added.

The ICT sector is comprised of enterprises engaged in the production of information-communication technologies or the provision of ICT services. These enterprises enable digital transformation of economy and society and are vital in a pandemic as they provide, among other things, infrastructure for remote work and remote education.

Turnover of the ICT sector EUR 107 million higher than in 2019

In 2020, all enterprises active in predominantly market activities generated 6% less turnover than in 2019. Enterprises of the ICT sector generated around EUR 4.547 million of turnover or 2% more than in 2019, when they generated 7% more turnover than in 2018.

The turnover of the ICT sector represented 4.6% of the turnover generated by all enterprises active in predominantly market activities (4.2% in 2019).

In comparison with 2019, the service ICT sector generated 3% more turnover, while in the ICT manufacturing sector the generated turnover remained on the same level.

In comparison with 2019, the turnover increased the most in enterprises in activity J58.2 – Software publishing (by 15%) and activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (by 5%). In activity J61 – Telecommunications the turnover decreased by 1%.

Enterprises of the ICT sector increased value added by about EUR 222 million

In 2020, enterprises of the ICT sector generated EUR 1,795 million of value added or 14% more than in 2019, when they generated 10% more value added than in 2018.

Enterprises of the ICT sector contributed 7.0% to value added generated by all enterprises active predominantly in market activities (6.1% in 2019).

As in 2019, the majority of ICT sector value added (90%) was generated by enterprises in the service ICT sector (91% in 2019). Also in 2020 half of the valued added of the ICT sector was generated by enterprises in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (EUR 892 million or 13% more than in 2019).

The valued added (apparent labour productivity) of the ICT sector per person employed was in 2020 EUR 59,866, which is 10% more than in 2019, when it was EUR 54,200.

More persons employed in the ICT sector

The number of persons employed in all enterprises active in predominantly market activities decreased in 2020 by 2%. On the other hand, the number of persons employed in the ICT sector increased by 3% (to 29,985). 11% of them were employed in the ICT manufacturing sector (12% in 2019) and 89% in the service ICT sector (88% in 2019). The persons employed in the ICT sector represented 4.5% of all persons employed in all enterprises active in predominantly market activities (4.3% in 2019).

59% of persons employed in the ICT sector were employed in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities. In comparison with 2019, their number increased by 5% (to 17,828). The number of persons employed in activity J63.1 – Data processing, hosting and related activities, web portals also increased by 5%. After years of decrease, the number of persons employed in activity J61 – Telecommunications increased by 2% in 2020.

The ICT sector allocated in 2020 around EUR 799 million for wages and salaries, 8% more than in 2019. 59% of those funds were allocated in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (11% more than in 2019).

Over 9,000 enterprises active in the ICT sector

In 2020, the ICT sector was comprised of 9,038 enterprises, which is 3% more than in the previous year. As in 2019, the number of enterprises decreased in the ICT manufacturing sector (by 2%) and increased in the service ICT sector (by 3%).

Enterprises of the ICT sector represented 6.0% of all enterprises active predominantly in market activities (5.9% in 2019).

77% of enterprises of the ICT sector were active in activity J62 – Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (6,945 or 4% more than in 2019). The number of enterprises in activity J63.1 – Data processing, hosting and related activities, web portals increased by 2% and in activity C26.8 – Manufacture of magnetic and optical media by 4%.
