Consumer opinion lower at the monthly level

In October 2021, the value of the consumer confidence indicator decreased by 4 percentage points (p.p.) at the monthly level and was 4 p.p. below the long-term average.

All four components of the consumer sentiment indicator worsened at the monthly level: expectations about households’ finances by 5 p.p., expectations about the country’s economy by 3 p.p., current households’ finances also by 3 p.p., and expectations for major purchases by 2 p.p.

The indicator of price change over the next 12 months also deteriorated (by 7 p.p.), which means that more and more Slovenian consumers expect prices to increase. This indicator reached its highest level since September 2012.

Consumer opinion improved at the annual level

Compared to October 2020, in October 2021 the value of the consumer confidence indicator was 4 p.p. higher.

The annual increase in the confidence indicator resulted mainly from more optimistic consumer expectations about the country’s economy (14 p.p.). Consumer expectations about major purchases and the consumer opinion on current households’ finances also slightly improved (by 2 p.p. and 1 p.p., respectively). The indicator of consumer expectations about households’ finances remained at the same level as in the previous year.

Consumers also more pessimistic about larger investments

All three indicators monitored quarterly worsened compared to July 2021: expectations of renovating a home by 7 p.p., expectations about car purchase by 3 p.p., and of buying or building a home by 2 p.p.
