Inflation in July 2021: annual at 2.0%, monthly at 0.4%

At the annual level consumer prices were on average higher by 2.0% and at the monthly level by 0.4%. The largest upward impact on the annual inflation came from higher prices of petroleum products, while monthly inflation was mostly due to the higher prices of package holidays.

In one year prices on average higher by 2.0%

In July 2021, annual inflation stood at 2.0% (in the same period last year at 0.3%), while the 12-month average price growth was 0.3% (in the same period last year 0.9%).

On average, goods prices went up by 2.9% and service prices by 0.3%. As regards goods, durable goods prices went up by 1.8%, semi-durable goods prices by 2.7% and non-durable goods prices by 3.2%.

In July 2021, the largest upward impact on the annual inflation, 1.2 percentage points, came from higher prices of petroleum products: liquid fuel prices increased by 25.2%, diesel prices by 29.2% and petrol prices by 24.4%. In addition, 0.3 p.p. came from higher prices of clothing and footwear (by 4.3%).

On the other hand, the inflation was offset by 0.5 p.p. by lower prices of package holidays (by 5.9%).

At the monthly level, too, prices on average higher

In July 2021, consumer prices were on average 0.4% higher than a month before.

The monthly growth rate was pushed up by 0.4 of a percentage point by higher prices of package holidays (by 12.9%) and by 0.2 p.p by higher prices of petroleum products (liquid fuel prices increased by 5.6%, diesel prices by 3.8% and petrol prices by 4.6%). Additional 0.1 each came from higher prices of accommodation services (by 5.2%), actual rentals paid by tenants (by 5.8%), hire of garages, parking spaces and personal transport equipment (by 15.3%), passenger transport by air (by 24.4%), household furniture (by 1.9%) and all other price increases in July.

On the other hand, summer sales lowered the prices of clothing and footwear by 8.0% and offset monthly inflation by 0.6 p.p. (which is slightly less than in previous years). Additional 0.1 p.p. each was contributed by lower prices of fresh fruit (by 4.1 %), and telephone and internet services (by 1.4%).

Harmonised indices of consumer prices

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in July 2021 the annual growth of consumer prices was 2.0% (in July 2020 it was −0.3%). The 12-month average price growth was 0.2% (in the same period of last year 0.8%). The monthly price growth was 0.1%.

On average, goods prices went up by 3.2% compared to July last year and service prices went down by 0.2%. As regards goods, the prices of durable goods went up by 1.9%, of semi-durable goods by 2.5% and of non-durable goods by 3.7%.

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in June 2021 the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 1.9% (in May 2021 the rate was 2.0%). In the EU-27 Member States it was 2.2% (down from 2.3% in May 2021). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Portugal (−0.6%) and the highest in Hungary (5.3%); in Slovenia it stood at 1.7%.
