In the 2020/21 academic year, 8% more students enrolled in tertiary education than in the previous academic year
In the academic year 2020/21, almost 82,700 students were enrolled in tertiary education, almost 8% more than in the academic year 2019/20. More than 9% of students moved to Slovenia to study, mostly from the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

In the academic year 2020/21, 82,694 students were enrolled in tertiary education, almost 8% or almost 6,000 more than in the academic year 2019/20. There were 63,192 full-time students or over 7% more than in the previous academic year, and 19,502 part-time students or over 9% more.
13% of all tertiary students in the academic year 2020/21 were students in higher vocational education (10,564). 72,130 or 87% of all students were enrolled in higher education.
Most students were enrolled in academic higher education (just over 24,000 or 29%) and professional higher education (just over 21,800 or 26%). The fewest students were enrolled in uniform master’s education (just over 4,600 or 6%) and doctoral education (just over 3,500 or 4%).
Compared to the previous academic year, the number of students in all types of education increased, except in higher vocational education, where it dropped by almost 100 or by 1%. The increase was the largest in professional higher education, by slightly more than 2,100 or just under 11%, and in academic higher education, by almost 1,800 or 8%.
The number of students increased in the last two academic years
Twenty years ago, 8,800 more students were enrolled, and ten years ago, slightly more than 24,400 more students were enrolled than in the 2020/21 academic year.
In the last twenty years, the number of enrolled students has grown until the 2006/07 academic year. After that, with the exception of the 2009/10 academic year, the number of enrolled students has been declining and has been growing again for the last two years.
The share of full-time students in the academic year 2020/21 was 76%, and of part-time students 24%, which is a similar ratio as in the previous academic year. The share of full-time students in the last twenty years was the highest in the academic year 2015/16 (81%), and the lowest in the academic year 2005/06 (63%).
Most female students in education, most male students in ICTs
In the academic year 2020/21, most students were enrolled in the study programs in the fields of Business, administration and law (just over 15,400 or 19%), followed by Engineering, manufacturing and construction (just over 14,700 or 18%) and Health and social security (just over 11,700 or 14%). In contrast, the fewest students were enrolled in the field of Agriculture, forestry, fisheries and veterinary medicine (about 2,300 or 3%).
In the 2020/21 academic year, about 35,000 men (42%) and about 47,700 women (58%) were enrolled in tertiary education. As a rule, female students choose different fields of study than male students.
The share of female students is the largest in the fields of Education with 87% of women and 13% of men and Health and welfare with 77% of women and 23% of men. The share of male students is the largest in the fields of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) with 82% of men and 18% of women and Engineering, manufacturing and construction with 74% of men and 26% of women. The distribution of students was the most even in the fields of Natural sciences, mathematics and statistics with 42% of men and 58% of women, and Services with 44% of men and 56% of women.
Just over 15,900 students entered higher education for the first time
In the academic year 2020/21, just over 15,900 students were enrolled for the first time in the first year of undergraduate studies, which is about 6% more than in the previous academic year (about 15,000).
More than 7,200 students were new entrants to higher professional studies. More than 7,900 newcomers were in academic higher education and fewer than 800 in uniform master’s education.
The majority of new entrants to higher education (60%) were 19 years old. More than 6% of newcomers were over 24 years old, while almost 500 of them were 30 years or older.
Mobile students from 119 different countries
Among all students enrolled in the academic year 2020/21, about 7,600 or more than 9% were mobile students, i.e. students with registered permanent residence abroad. They came from 119 different countries.
As in the previous academic years, most of them (60%) were from the countries of the former Yugoslavia, 28% from the EU member states and 12% from other countries. Most of them came from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia.
