In September and October 2020 the number of foreign travellers was almost half of the number in the summer of 2020

More than 80% of foreign travellers who arrived to Slovenia in the autumn were in transit; only 10% of travellers were on a same-day visit. Even fewer travellers (3%) stayed in our country as tourists. The rest of foreign travellers are here for work, school or daily errands. When we conducted our survey in September and October 2020, we saw the number of foreign travellers decline almost by half. The summer vacations ended and COVID-19 restrictions were applied again.

Most foreign travellers entered Slovenia in the vicinity of the former border with Hungary. When the travellers were exiting our country, we counted most of them at the former Austrian and Italian borders.

Almost all foreign travellers came to Slovenia from European countries. Most of them were transit travellers from Germany, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Poland. Same-day visitors are predominantly residents of neighbouring countries of Italy, Croatia and Austria, followed by Germany, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Same-day visitors came to Slovenia for business reasons

In the selected period, 10% of foreign travellers visited Slovenia for one day. There was an increase in the number of same-day visitors who came for business reasons, from 16% in the summer months to 19% in September and October.

The largest shares of expenditures of foreign travellers were transport costs and shopping expenses
