Number of agricultural holdings is decreasing
According to first provisional data of the Agricultural Census 2020, there were 67,927 agricultural holdings in Slovenia, which is 9% fewer than in 2010 (74,646) and 21% fewer than in 2000 (86,467).
An average agricultural holding in Slovenia is larger than ten years ago
An agricultural holding in Slovenia in 2020 on average utilized 7.0 hectares of agricultural area and bred 6.0 livestock units (LSU). That is on average 0.6 hectares of utilized agricultural area (UAA) and 0.4 LSU more than ten years ago, and 1.4 hectares of UAA and 0.6 LSU more than twenty years ago.
Agricultural holdings with 20 hectares or more UAA represented only 6% of all agricultural holdings in 2020, but they utilized 34% of total UAA in the country. On the other hand, agricultural holdings with less than 3 hectares represented 38% of all holdings, but utilized only 9% of total UAA. There was a noticeable shift in size class distribution in 2020 compared to 2010. The number of agricultural holdings without UAA and holdings with 20 hectares of UAA or more went up. In the other two classes, the number of holdings went down.
On average in terms of UAA, in 2020 agricultural holdings were the largest in Pomurska and Primorsko-notranjska statistical regions (9.0 and 8.6 hectares of UAA per agricultural holding that had UAA, respectively).
