Final data on research and development activity (R&D) in Slovenia for 2019 are here
Final data on R&D in Slovenia for 2019 are available. They slightly differ from provisional data. Data at a more detailed level are published in the SiStat Database.
More spent on R&D than in the previous year
Final data on research and development activity in Slovenia for 2019, which slightly differ from provisional data published in the First Release on 5 November 2020, are now available also at a more detailed level in the SiStat Database.
In 2019, gross domestic expenditure on R&D (GERD) in Slovenia in all sectors in which R&D is performed amounted to EUR 990.7 million. Compared with the previous year, GERD was nominally higher by 11% or EUR 89 million. With this, the corresponding share in GDP1 also increased, namely it stood at 2.05% of GDP. Nevertheless, Slovenia is still far from the Barcelona target, which envisages an increase in R&D investment to at least 3% of GDP by 2020.
Business enterprise sector remains the leading R&D investing sector
The business enterprise sector remains the leading R&D investing sector, both in terms of performing and funding. In 2019, its intramural R&D expenditure represented 74% of GERD or 1.51% of GDP, and its financial support for R&D 62% of GERD or 1.26% of GDP.
More people involved in preforming R&D
In 2019, 25,062 persons were involved in performing R&D in Slovenia, which is 6% more than in 2018. Among them were 15,925 researchers.
If the number of persons who worked in R&D is expressed in full time equivalent (FTE), data show that work performed by these persons is equivalent to the amount of work that would be performed by 16,983 persons or 10,507 researchers with full-time employment.
1 GERD as a percentage of GDP is calculated based on the latest revision of GDP.
