Correction - Waste, Slovenia, 2019
CORRECTION - data in the release Waste, Slovenia, 2019 are published again
Due to an error discovered in the statistical data on the generated and collected amounts of municipal waste for reference year 2019, published in the First Release on 8 October 2020, the data on waste are published again. We apologize for the inconvenience.
The amount of waste generated in Slovenia is increasing
In 2019, 8.4 million tons of all types of waste was generated in Slovenia, of which almost 5.1 million tons or 60% was construction and demolition waste. Total amount of waste generated in Slovenia in 2019 was not much higher than in 2018 (by less than 1%), but the amount of municipal waste was higher among these wastes (by 4%).
Municipal waste up by 4% compared to 2018
In Slovenia, 1,064,000 tons of municipal waste was generated in 2019 and it accounted for 13% of all waste generated this year. Compared to the previous year, 4 % more municipal waste was generated in 2019. In 2019, a resident of Slovenia generated on average 509 kg of municipal waste, 14 kg more than in 2018.
Hazardous waste up by 4% compared to 2018
The amount of hazardous waste generated in 2019 also increased in comparison with 2018 (by 4%). In 2019, almost 146,000 tons were generated in Slovenia, and they represented a little less than 2% of all waste generated this year. 71% of hazardous waste was generated in production activities, 26% in service activities and 3% in households. Compared to 2018, the amount of hazardous waste increased in service activities (by 27%) and in households (by 8%); in production activities it slightly decreased (by 2%).
In production activities almost 12% less waste generated in 2019 than in 2018
According to the activity in which waste is generated, in 2019 in Slovenia most of all types of waste were generated in service activities (60% or 5.1 million tons), a third was generated in production activities (32% or almost 2.7 million tons) and less than a tenth in households (8% or almost 641,000 tons). Compared to the previous year, the amount of all types of waste in 2019 increased in service activities (by 9%) and in households (by less than 1%), and decreased in production activities (by almost 12%). Both the increase (in service activities) and the decrease (in production activities) of the total amount of all types of waste generated, were the result of a larger or smaller amount of construction and demolition waste generated.
More than half of all waste is construction and demolition waste
In Slovenia in 2019, the largest amount of construction and demolition waste (60%) was generated, followed by municipal waste (13%), waste from thermal processes (11%), waste from metal and wood treatment and processing (6% in total), waste from waste management facilities (4%) and other types of waste (6%).
Least municipal waste per capita in the Koroška statistical region
The regional distribution of municipal waste generation in Slovenia shows that in 2019 (as in 2018) most of the municipal waste per capita was generated in the Obalno-kraška statistical region (588 kg per capita) and the least in the Koroška statistical region (423 kg per capita). More municipal waste was generated in western Slovenia (540 kg per capita) than in eastern Slovenia (482 kg per capita). More information on waste at the level of statistical regions and municipalities is available in the STAGE application (variables: Environment / Waste).
The amount of separately collected municipal waste is increasing
Of the total amount of municipal waste generated in 2019 in Slovenia, a little more than 775,000 tons or 73% was separately collected. The amount of separately collected municipal waste increased from 71% in 2018 to 73% in 2019. In 2019, as in the previous year, municipal waste was separately collected in the largest share in the Gorenjska statistical region (79%) and the lowest in the Obalno-kraška statistical region (62%). In the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region, 76% of municipal waste generated in this region was collected separately.
Less waste recovered than in 2018, mainly construction and demolition waste
In Slovenia, 7.4 million tons of waste was recovered through final recovery processes in 2019, and approximately 388,000 tons of waste was disposed of. Almost 7% less waste was recovered in 2019 than in 2018. The total amount of recovered waste in 2019 was lower than in 2018 mainly due to a lower amount of construction and demolition waste being recovered, but waiting for final recovery processes (especially backfilling) in temporary storage at the end of 2019. Waste disposal went up by 11% over 2018. The reason for the increase was more waste disposed of on landfill sites and more waste handed over for permanent storage.
Quantitatively, more waste disposed of than in 2018
In 2019 in Slovenia, 169,000 tons of all types of waste were disposed of on landfill sites, which is almost 8% more than in the previous year. 92% of this waste was landfilled on municipal waste landfill sites, 6% on industrial waste landfill sites and 2% on hazardous waste landfill sites. The waste that was landfilled was predominantly mixed fraction of municipal waste and residues after mechanical and biological treatment of waste (68% in total), followed by construction and demolition waste (13%) and waste from pulp and paper production and processing (11%). Other types of waste were disposed of in smaller amounts.
Fluctuations in the amounts of landfilled waste among individual years are the result of temporarily stored and untreated amounts of waste in the observed year.
Less waste imported, more exported than in 2018
Compared to 2018, in 2019 imports of waste to Slovenia were quantitatively lower by almost 3%, while the exports were higher by almost 2%. In 2019, too, most of the imported and exported waste was metal waste (54% of all imported and 40% of all exported waste).
