In October 2020, tourism in Slovenia again marked by the COVID-19 epidemic
Due to the second wave of the COVID-19 epidemic and consequently government actions to prevent its spread, in October 2020 the number of tourist overnight stays reached only 51% of the overnight stays recorded in October 2019.
In October 2020, domestic tourists, despite the COVID-19 epidemic, generated 25% more overnight stays than in October 2019
In October 2020, tourist accommodation establishments recorded more than 173,000 tourist arrivals (63% fewer than in October 2019). While domestic tourists generated almost 134,000 arrivals (2% more than in October 2019), foreign tourists generated almost 40,000 (88% fewer than in October 2019).
Tourists generated more than 543,000 overnight stays in October 2020 (49% fewer than in October 2019), of which domestic tourists generated more than 412,000 overnight stays (25% more than in October 2019) and foreign more than 131.000 (82% fewer than in October 2019).
On 24 October 2020 the Government issued the Ordinance on the Provisional Prohibition on the Offering and Sale of Goods and Services to Consumers in the Republic of Slovenia. Tourist accommodation establishments could not register new tourist arrivals after this date.
Most foreign overnight stays generated by tourists from Germany, Austria and Italy
The most overnight stays among foreign tourists in October 2020 were generated by tourists from Germany (16% or 20,000), followed by tourists from Austria and Italy (both 13%), Serbia (10%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (8%) and Croatia (6%).
Almost one third of all tourist overnight stays in October 2020 recorded in health (spa) resorts
In October 2020, all types of municipalities recorded fewer tourist overnight stays than in October 2019. Health (spa) resorts recorded more than 174,000 overnight stays or 32% of all tourist overnight stays, followed by seaside resorts (more than 141,000 overnight stays or 26% of all tourist overnight stays) and by mountain resorts (more than 84,000 overnight stays or 16% of all tourist overnight stays).
While domestic tourists generated the most overnight stays in health (spa) resorts (39% of all domestic tourist overnight stays in October 2020), foreign tourist generated the most in seaside resorts (21% of all foreign tourist overnight stays).
Compared to October 2019, the highest drop of tourist overnight stays was recorded in the municipality of Ljubljana (by 79%), followed by mountain resorts (by 63%).
More than a half of all tourist overnight stays in hotels
In October 2020, hotels recorded almost 288,000 overnight stays, which was 53% of all tourist overnight stays generated in Slovenia in October 2020 (but 54% fewer than in October 2019).
Private rooms, apartments and dwellings recorded 19% of all tourist overnight stays, followed by camping sites (6%), apartment settlements (4%) and temporary accommodation establishments and marinas (3%).
In October 2020, all accommodation establishments recorded fewer tourist overnight stays than in October 2019, except tourist farms with accommodation, which in October 2020 recorded 24% more tourist overnight stays than in October 2019 (slightly more than 16,000). 88% of all tourist overnight stays at tourist farms with accommodation were generated by domestic tourists.
37% fewer tourist overnight stays by the end of October 2020 compared to the same period in 2019
From the beginning of January until the end of October 2020, tourists generated more than 3 million arrivals (46% fewer than in the same period in 2019) and more than 9 million overnight stays (37% fewer than in the same period in 2019).
While in this period domestic tourists generated 39% more arrivals and 49% more overnight stays than in 2019, foreign tourists generated 72% fewer arrivals and 68% fewer overnight stays.
