Consumer prices in September 2020 annually down by 0.3% and monthly by 0.4%

In September 2020, consumer prices were on average lower by 0.3% at the annual level and by 0.4% at the monthly level. The annual deflation was mostly the result of cheaper petroleum products. In one year, goods prices went down by 1%, while service prices went up by 0.8%.

In September 2020 annual inflation stood at –0.3% (in the same period last year 1.7%), while the 12-month average price growth was 0.5% (in the same period last year 1.7%).

Compared to September 2019, goods prices went down by 1%. The prices of semi-durable goods decreased on average by 3.4%, of non-durable goods by 0.5% and of durable goods by 0.2%. In one year, service prices went up on average by 0.8%.

In September 2020, the largest downward impact on the annual inflation (1 percentage point) came from lower prices of petroleum products. The prices of fuel and lubricants dropped by 19.7% (petrol prices decreased by 20.5% and diesel prices by 19.5%) and of liquid fuel by 16.3%. Another 0.4 of a percentage point of downward impact had lower prices of clothing and footwear (by 5.3%).

On the other hand, the annual growth rate was pushed up by 0.6 p.p. by higher prices of food (by 4.4%).

In September 2020 prices at the monthly level 0.4% lower

In September 2020, consumer prices went down on average by 0.4%. 0.7 p.p. was contributed by lower prices of package holidays (by 14.9%). 0.1 p.p. each was contributed by lower prices of accommodation services (by 4.9%), of motor cars (by 1.1%), of products from group electricity, gas and other fuels (by 0.9%) and of food (by 0.4%).

The upward impact on inflation (0.5 p.p.) came from higher prices of clothing and footwear (by 7.1%). Additional 0.2 p.p. was contributed by all other price increases in September.

Harmonised indices of consumer prices

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in September 2020 the annual growth of consumer prices was –0.7% (in September 2019 1.7%). The 12-month average price growth was 0.4% (in the same period last year 1.8%). The monthly price growth was –0.2%.

Compared to September 2019, goods prices went down by 1.9%. The prices of semi-durable goods decreased on average by 3.5%, of non-durable goods by 1.9% and of durable goods by 0.3%. In one year, service prices went up on average by 1.2%.

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in August 2020 the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was –0.2% (in July 2020 0.4%). In the EU-27 it was 0.4% (in June 2020 0.9%). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Cyprus (−2.9%) and the highest in Hungary (4%); in Slovenia it stood at −0.7%.
