Consumer confidence up at the monthly level

In July 2020 the consumer confidence indicator increased by 3 percentage points (p.p.) at the monthly level, which was the third consecutive monthly increase since the record low in April 2020.

All four components of the consumer confidence indicator improved at the monthly level: expectations about households’ finances and savings expectations both improved by 4 p.p., unemployment expectations by 3 p.p., and expectations about the country’s economy by 2 p.p.

Consumer confidence declined at the annual level

The consumer confidence indicator was 26 p.p. lower than in July 2019 and 23 p.p. lower than last year’s average.

The decline of the consumer confidence indicator at the annual level was mainly due to lower unemployment expectations (by 52 p.p.) and lower expectations about the country’s economy (by 41 p.p.). Consumer expectations regarding the financial situation in the household also decreased (by 12 p.p.), while savings expectations improved by 2 p.p.

Consumers more optimistic about larger investments

All three indicators monitored quarterly improved compared to April 2020: expectations of renovating a home by 14 p.p., expectations of buying a car by 9 p.p., and expectations of buying or building a home by 2 p.p.
