Waste prevention is the most desirable waste management option. This is followed by reuse, material and energy recovery of waste, and finally disposal on landfill sites, which is the least desirable waste management option. Legally only treated waste is permitted to be disposed. Adequate infrastructure, including waste treatment and disposal facilities and landfill sites, is essential for proper waste management.Waste recovery and disposal facilities
In 2018, 412 waste recycling facilities operated in Slovenia, in which almost 3.6 million tons of waste was recycled, which is 38% of all waste generated in or imported into Slovenia.
In 227 facilities for waste recovery with backfilling, 4.1 million tons of waste was recovered, which is 43% of all waste generated in or imported into Slovenia in 2018 (mainly construction and demolition waste). In eight facilities for waste incineration for the purpose of energy recovery, 207,000 tons of waste was utilized for energy, which is more than 2% of all waste generated in or imported into Slovenia in 2018. In three facilities for waste incineration for the purpose of waste disposal, 39,000 tons of waste was removed, or less than 1% of all waste generated in or imported into Slovenia in 2018.
The number of waste treatment facilities increased by 12% between 2016 and 2018. The amounts of recovered waste also increased (more on this in the table below).

In 2018, 16 landfill sites were operating in Slovenia, of which 13 for non-hazardous waste, two for inert waste and one for hazardous waste. Eleven landfill sites (most) were in eastern Slovenia and five in western Slovenia.
In 2018, 157,000 tons of all types of waste were disposed of on landfill sites in Slovenia, which is 2% of all waste generated in or imported into Slovenia in this year.
The number of waste disposal facilities decreased from 2016 to 2018, while the amount of waste disposed of slightly increased (more on this in the table below). One landfill site for non-hazardous waste was closed in Slovenia during this period.
