More active persons than a year before

According to the Statistical Office of Slovenia, the number of active persons (i.e. employed and unemployed) increased by about 18,000 in 2018 and reached 980,880. On 1 January 2019 employed persons represented 92% of all active persons (0.8 of a percentage point more than a year earlier).

In 2018 the number of pension recipients among the population of Slovenia increased somewhat so on 1 January 2019 there were 532,267 pension recipients in Slovenia. Two thirds (68%) of all inactive population aged 15 or more (i.e. retired persons, pupils and students, and other inactive), were retired. The number of pupils and students decreased by about 3,500. The number of other inactive population decreased by about 3,300.

Better educated

On 1 January 2019 Slovenia had 427,333 residents with tertiary education. The share of population with tertiary education in Slovenia increased by 0.5 percentage point in 2018 and reached 24.2%,

In total, there were 406,998 residents aged 15 or more with basic or lower education. The number of population with this level of education decreased, which is the result of young people continuing their education and also of low education among those who died in 2018. Among the population aged 65 or over, there were 40% with basic or lower education on 1 January 2019, while among the population aged 25–49, there were under 9% with that level of education.

Better education among the employed, retired women less educated than retired men

Among the employed population, 35% had tertiary education. Among the unemployed population, this share was 19%. The share of those with upper secondary education was similar in both groups, just under 60%. Accordingly, the share of those with basic or lower education was higher among the unemployed: 22% as opposed to 8% among the employed.

More than a third (38%) of pension recipients had basic or lower education. Due to a specific age-sex structure of this group (more women live to old age), there were more women with basic or lower education (47%) than men (26%). The smallest gap between sexes among pension recipients was recorded among those with tertiary education, but they were quite few (about 12%) and were mostly less than 75 years old.
