In the last five years employment in construction up by 17%

In September 2019 the number of persons in employment increased by 0.4% over the previous month. Compared to September 2018 it increased by 2.1% (to about 896,800). Around 65,100 persons were employed in construction.

In September 2019 the number of persons in employment up by 0.4% over the previous month

In September 2019 the number of persons in employment in Slovenia was about 896,800. Compared to the previous month it increased by 0.4% and compared to September 2018 by 2.1% (by about 18,900). At the monthly level the number of persons in paid employment increased by 0.4% (to just over 805,300) and the number of self-employed persons by 0.2% (to about 91,400).

Compared to the previous month, the number of men in employment increased by 0.2% (to more than 493,500) and the number of women in employment by 0.6% (to more than 403,200).

The number of persons in employment increased compared to the previous month in all statistical regions of employment, the most in the Zasavska and Posavska statistical regions, i.e. by 0.6%. Compared to September 2018 the number of persons in employment also increased in all statistical regions of employment, the most in the Goriška statistical region (by 3.6% or by more than 1,600).

An overview by activities shows that compared to the previous month the number of persons in employment in Slovenia in September 2019 increased in eighteen activities and decreased in two. Compared to September 2018 it decreased in five and increased in fifteen activities, the most in construction, by more than 4,700 or by 7.9%. 


In September 2019 approximately 65,100 persons were employed in construction; 84% of them were in paid employment and 16% were self-employed. 42% of them were foreigners, most of them citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by citizens of Kosovo, Northern Macedonia and Serbia.

21.4% or just under 14,000 of persons in employment worked in construction of buildings, 13.5% or almost 8,800 in civil engineering and 65.1% or almost 42,400 in specialized construction activities. 

18% of persons in employment in construction had basic education or less, 72% had upper secondary education and 10% had tertiary education. The share of persons in employment with basic education or less was the highest in construction of buildings, with upper secondary education in specialized construction activities and with tertiary education in civil engineering.

Compared to August 2019 the number of persons in employment in construction increased by 0.2%. Compared to September 2018 it increased by more than 4,700 or by 7.9%. In the last five years the number of persons in employment in construction increased by almost 9,500 or by 17%, the most in specialized construction activities; i.e. by more than 7,300 or by 20.9%
