In the last five years employment in trade activities up by more than 10%

In August 2019 the number of persons in employment decreased by 0.1% over the previous month. Compared to August 2018 it increased by 2.4% (to about 893,200). Around 114,400 persons were employed in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

In August 2019 the number of persons in employment in Slovenia was about 893,200. Compared to the previous month it decreased by 0.1% and compared to August 2018 it increased by 2.4% (by about 20,700). At the monthly level the number of persons in paid employment decreased by 0.1% (to almost 802,000) and the number of self-employed persons increased by 0.2% (to more than 91,200).

Compared to the previous month, the number of men in employment decreased by 0.1% (to almost 492,400) and the number of women in employment also by 0.1% (to almost 400,800). 

The number of persons in employment decreased compared to July 2019 in all statistical regions of employment except in Savinjska and Pomurska, where it increased by about 100. It decreased the most in Podravska, i.e. by 0.2% or almost 300. Compared to August 2018 the number of persons in employment increased in all statistical regions of employment, the most in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region (by 2.4% or by almost 7,200), followed by Podravska (by 2.5% or by almost 3,000) and Savinjska (by 2.3% or by almost 2,400).  

An overview by activities shows that compared to July 2019 the number of persons in employment in Slovenia in August 2019 increased in twelve activities and decreased in eight. Compared to August 2018, it decreased in six and increased in fourteen activities, the most in construction, by about 5,300 or by 8.9%, and in manufacturing, by about 4,300 or by 2.1%.

In August 2019 approximately 144,400 persons were employed in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles. 93% of them were in paid employment and 7% were self-employed. 48% of them were men and 52% were women. 

14% or more than 15,900 of persons in employment worked in wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, 35% or almost 40,600 in wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles and 51% or almost 57,900 in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles. 



4% of persons in employment in trade activities had basic education or less, 69% had upper secondary education and 27% had tertiary education. The share of persons in employment with basic education or less and with upper secondary education was the highest in wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles. The share of persons in employment with tertiary education was the highest in wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

Compared to July 2019 the number of persons in employment in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles remained at the same level. Compared to August 2018 it increased by more than 2,400 or by 2%. In the last five years the number of persons in employment in trade activities increased by almost 10,700 or by 10.3%, the most in retail trade, except in motor vehicles and motorcycles; i.e. by more than 5,000.
