Average household consumption expenditure in Slovenia in 2018 EUR 19,560

Expenditure on transportation, food, non-alcoholic beverages and housing accounted for half of the household consumption expenditure in Slovenia in 2018.

Expenditure on transportation, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and housing accounted for half of the consumption expenditure

Total allocated assets in 2018 amounted to EUR 21,360 EUR. For consumption expenditure households spent EUR 19,560 (92% of total allocated assets) or EUR 1,630 per month. The rest was other expenditure that is not part of consumption expenditure, and this in 2018 amounted to EUR 1,801. Such expenditure includes major works and other expenses.

Among the consumption expenditure, which compared to 2015 increased by 13%, the largest share was represented by expenditure on transport (EUR 4,184 or 21.4%), followed by expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages (EUR 2,817 or 14.4%) and expenditure on housing (EUR 2,736 or 14.0%). Other major expenditure was expenditure on miscellaneous goods and services (EUR 2,191 or 11.2%) and expenditure on recreation and culture (EUR 1,776 or 9.1%).

Households with the lowest income spent 22% of their assets on food and non-alcoholic beverages
A comparison between one-fifth of households with the highest income (quintile 5) and one-fifth of households with the lowest income (quintile 1) showed that households with the highest income spent for consumption expenditure 3.6-times as much as households with the lowest income.

As regards consumption expenditure, households in the lowest two income quintiles spent the most on food and non-alcoholic beverages and on housing, while households in the top three quintiles spent the most on transport and on food and non-alcoholic beverages.

The consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages represents 22% and together with housing 45% of consumption expenditure of the households in the lowest income quintile. On the other hand, in the highest income quintile, the expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages represents 12% of consumption expenditure of the households, and together with expenditure on housing 22% or the same as only expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages in the lowest quintile.

Four-person households spent 2.8-times as much as one-person households
The average household in 2018 had 2.5 members. Average household consumption expenditure by number of household members:    
  • One-person households spent EUR 10,094, mostly for housing (20.1%) and food and non-alcoholic beverages (18.4%)
  • Two-person households spent EUR 17,312 or 1.7-times as much as one-person households, mostly for transport (19.1%) and housing (15.9%)
  • Three-person households spent EUR 24,636 or 2.4-times as much as one-person households, mostly for transport (22.9%) and food and non-alcoholic beverages (13.0%)
  • Four-person households spent EUR 28,458 or 2.8-times as much as one-person households, mostly for transport (24.8%) and food and non-alcoholic beverages (12.4%)

Taking into account the value of own production, households spent on average EUR 37 more per month
If monetary value of own production of households is added to consumption expenditure, households in 2018 spent on average EUR 20,004 or EUR 1,667 per month. The monetary value of own production includes the value of products from own production consumed by the household in one year (food, beverages, wood for heating).
