In 2018, 7 out of 10 children born in the Koroška and Pomurska statistical regions were born to unmarried mothers

First-time mothers were in 2018 the youngest in the Posavska statistical region (28.4 years) and were on average 2.3 years younger than those in Obalno-kraška. More than 70% of children born in the Koroška statistical region were born to unmarried mothers.

In the data on births the diversity of Slovenia is most evident in the share of children born to unmarried mothers. The north-eastern part of Slovenia, especially the Koroška statistical region, was already in the 1970s the area with the highest share of children born to unmarried mothers. This was the case also in 2018: the most children born to unmarried mothers were born in Koroška (72%) and Pomurska (68.7%). Half of children, the least in Slovenia, were born to unmarried mothers in 2018 in Osrednjeslovenska (50%) and Primorsko-notranjska (50.7%), which are traditionally the regions with the lowest shares of children born to unmarried mothers.

First-time mothers the youngest in the Posavska statistical region

In all 12 statistical regions in Slovenia the mean age of mothers (regardless of birth order) exceeded 30 years. On average the oldest were mothers in Osrednjeslovenska and Obalno-kraška (31.7 years) as well as in Goriška (31.2 years). The youngest were mothers in Posavska and Jugovzhodna Slovenija (30.2 years).

Women who in 2018 gave birth for the first time were on average older than 30 in two statistical regions: in Obalno-kraška (30.7 years) and Osrednjeslovenska (30.1 years). First-time mothers were on average the youngest in the Posavska statistical region (28.4 years) and were on average 2.3 years younger than those in the Obalno-kraška statistical region.
