In 2018 the production of cow’s milk decreased by 2.9% compared to 2017
In 2018 almost 629,000 tons of cow’s milk was produced, i.e. almost 2.9% less than in 2017. Cows were milked on around 13,300 agricultural holdings. In 2018 fewer than 5,900 agricultural holdings were producing milk for either sale by contract or direct sale. On the remaining 7,400 agricultural holdings milk was mostly used as feed or for food (self-supply). Almost 91% of produced cow’s milk was collected by dairies and other registered purchasers
The quantity of collected cow’s milk represented almost 91% of all cow’s milk produced in Slovenia. The total quantity of collected cow’s milk (almost 571,000 tons) decreased by more than 8,000 tons compared to 2017 (a 1.4% decrease). In 2018 cow’s milk was collected from around 5,300 agricultural holdings (around 200 fewer than in the previous year). Milk production is mainly being abandoned on farms with smaller milk production. Detailed data on the structure of producers of collected cow’s milk are available in the attachment
. The quantity of cow’s milk intended for animal feed decreased by more than 14% over the previous year
In 2018 around 38,000 tons of milk was used as feed or about 14% less than in 2017. The quantity of milk used as animal feed continues to decrease. There are two reasons for that: on farms with milk production milk substitutes are being increasingly used, while on the other hand on farms with sucler cows milk is sucked directly by calves (not milked).
In 2018 the quantity of cow’s drinking milk for home consumption decreased to less than 8,600 tons
On fewer than 12,400 agricultural holdings cow’s milk was used for home consumption. The quantity of milk used for home consumption decreased by more than 500 tons (almost 6% less than in 2017). The quantity of milk sold directly on the farms decreased in 2018
Direct sale of cow’s milk has been falling for the last few years and decreased also in 2018, namely to less than 4,700 tons. On agricultural holdings less milk was processed into milk products in 2018
The share of cow’s milk used for the production of milk products on the agricultural holdings is relatively low; just over 1% of produced cow’s milk was transformed into milk products. Around 6,600 tons of cow's milk was used for the production of milk products in 2018 (more than 20% less than in the previous year). The reason for this decrease is also that some large milk products producers have transformed into dairies and purchasers of milk. In the structure of milk processed on farms, cheeses are still the prevailing products with over 40% of milk processed into curd and over a third into other types of cheese. In the last few years the production of other milk products has been increasing on agricultural holdings (mainly yoghurt and acidified milk), while the production of cream and butter has decreased.
the quantity of cow's milk processed on dairy farms decreased, the total
quantity of dairy products increased by more than 19%. This is due to the fact
that production decreased mainly in dairy products, which require more
kilograms of milk per kilogram of product, but increased especially in the
production of yoghurts and sour milk, where a kilogram of milk product is also
obtained from a kilogram of milk. In 2018 the production of goat’s and of ewe’s milk increased
In 2018 almost 1,700 tons of goat’s milk and more than 600 tons of ewe’s milk was produced.
More detailed data on production and utilization of milk on agricultural holdings are available in the SiStat database. In the attached file
we are also publishing data on cow’s milk production by cohesion regions, the structure of utilization of cow’s milk on agricultural holdings and data on the structure of producers of collected milk.
