External trade in goods in April 2019 higher than in April 2018

Slovenia in April 2019 recorded growth in external trade in goods both in exports and imports. Due to higher growth of imports than exports, Slovenia generated the largest observed deficit in the last ten years amounting to EUR 278.2 million.

Exports and imports in April 2019 higher than in April 2018

Slovenia’s exports in April 2019 amounted to EUR 2,809.1 million and imports to EUR 3,087.3 million. The April 2019 values of exports and imports were higher than April exports and imports in the last ten years. April 2018 exports were exceeded by 12.9% and imports by 28.4%.

In April 2019 Slovenia generated already the fifth external trade April deficit (EUR 278.2 million) in the last ten years which was also the highest of all recorded April deficits. The export/import ratio in April 2019 was 91.0%.

In trade with EU non-member countries the largest deficit in the last ten years was generated

As regards trade with EU non-member countries, in April 2019 Slovenia recorded a much higher growth in imports than in exports. Exports in April 2019 to this group of countries amounted to EUR 657.5 million (up by 21.7% over April 2018) and imports to EUR 970.9 million (up by 129.0% over April 2018). In April 2019 Slovenia generated a deficit of EUR 313.4 million in trade with this group of countries. This was the first April deficit in the last ten years, which was also the largest monthly deficit by value in the same period. Switzerland was the most important trading partner of Slovenia in April 2019 in trade with EU non-member countries both at exports and imports, while the most important group of products was medical and pharmaceutical products. The largest growth in trade in goods with Slovenia within this group of countries was also recorded with Switzerland and the group of medical and pharmaceutical products.

As in the previous months of 2019, in April 2019 too Slovenia recorded growth in external trade with EU Member States. Exports to these countries were higher by 10.4% and imports from these countries by 6.9% compared to April 2018. In April 2019 the value of exported goods was EUR 2,151.6 million and of imported goods EUR 2,116.4 million (this is a EUR 35.2 million surplus in trade with EU Member States).

In the first four months of 2019 Slovenia also generated an external trade deficit

Slovenia's exports and imports in January-April 2019 both increased compared to the same period of 2018. Exports were higher by 10.0% and amounted to EUR 11,040.7 million, while imports were higher by 13.9% and amounted to EUR 11,169.0 million.

The external trade deficit in the first four months of 2019 was EUR 128.2 million and the export/import ratio was 98.9%.
