Estimation of the construction of buildings and dwellings, Slovenia, 2018

Compared to 2017, more buildings and almost the same number of dwellings completed in 2018

Almost 8,000 buildings were completed in Slovenia in 2018, 20% more than in 2017. 3,037 dwellings were completed, which is almost the same as in the previous year. Most dwellings were completed in Ljubljana (269) and Maribor (93).

Almost 8,000 buildings completed in 2018

In 2018, 7,933 residential and non-residential buildings were completed in Slovenia, 20% more than in 2017. The total floor area of these buildings was just over 1.7 million square metres or 19% more than the total floor area of buildings built in 2017. The floor area of completed residential buildings was 2% larger and the floor area of completed non-residential buildings 32% larger than in 2017. In 2018, 13,681 buildings were still under construction, 46% of them residential and 54% of them non-residential.

Natural persons invested more than legal persons

In 2018, natural persons completed 7,025 buildings with more than 1 million square metres of floor area, while legal persons completed almost 908 buildings with the total floor area of more than 740,000 square metres. Natural persons invested mostly in one-dwelling buildings (52% of floor area) and farm buildings (29% of floor area). On the other hand, legal persons invested mostly in industrial buildings (35% of floor area), reservoirs, silos and warehouses (16% of floor area) and wholesale and retail trade buildings (11% of floor area).

Seven fewer dwellings completed than in 2017

In 2018, 10,153 dwellings were under construction in Slovenia, of which 3,037 were completed by the end of the year, which is 7 dwellings fewer than in 2017. The total floor area of dwellings completed in 2018 was almost 450,000 square meters, which is 2% more that the total floor area of dwellings built in 2017. The average floor area of a dwelling completed in one-dwelling buildings was 161 square meters, which is one square meter more than in 2017, and in multi-dwelling buildings 94 square meters, which is 12 square meters more than in 2017. 85% of the dwellings were under construction by natural persons and 28% of them were completed by the end of 2018. Other dwellings were being built by legal persons and 39% of them were completed by the end of 2018.

Most dwellings built in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region

In 2018 most of the dwellings were completed in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region (24% of all), followed by the Podravska statistical region (21%). On the other hand, the fewest dwellings were completed in the Zasavska region (1%). Among the municipalities in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region most dwellings were completed in Ljubljana (269), followed by Škofljica (70) and Domžale (50), whereas in the Podravska statistical region most dwellings were completed in Maribor (93), followed by Ptuj (66) and Slovenska Bistrica (46).

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
Data for completed buildings and dwellings are estimated based on building permits data. From 2016 on the source of the building permits data has been the Spatial Information System. Before 2016 the data were collected with the paper questionnaire on building permits (GRAD-GD/M). Data on completed dwellings are also published in the cartographic application STAGE.
