SURS publishes data on the consumption of plant protection products in agriculture in Slovenia for the second time; the first such survey was carried out in 2014 (SI-STAT).

In 2017, 510 tons of active substances in plant protection products were consumed in agriculture in Slovenia. Wholesale on the Slovenian market amounted to 1,087 tons of active substances in plant protection products.

In 2017, 510 tons of active substances in plant protection products were consumed in agriculture, of which 413 tons of fungicides, 77 tons of herbicides, 19 tons of insecticides and 1.5 tons of other plant protection products.

Most of the fungicides were consumed in vineyards (323.9 tons) and in orchards (57.5 tons). Most of the herbicides, 54.1 tons, were consumed on areas sown with maize (both grain maize and green maize). On areas sown with cereals for the production of grain (grain maize excluded) 12.3 tons of herbicides were consumed. Most of the insecticides were consumed in orchards (15.8 tons) and in vineyards (2 tons).

As regards fungicides, sulfur was consumed the most (215.9 tons), followed by folpet (50.9 tons) and mancozeb (44.9 tons). As regards herbicides, S-metolachlor was consumed the most (29.4 tons), followed by terbuthylazine (10.5 tons) and glyphosate (8.5 tons). As regards insecticides, paraffin oil was consumed the most (14.6 tons), followed by chlorpyrifos-methyl (1.4 tons).

The average consumption of plant protection products per hectare of main area with individual crops was the highest in vineyards (21 kg per ha) and in orchards (19.3 kg per ha). In vineyards and orchards the most used were fungicides: 20.5 kg per ha in vineyards and 14.4 kg per ha in orchards. On areas sown with wheat and spelt on average 0.6 kg per ha of plant protection products were consumed; fungicides 0.3 kg per ha and herbicides 0.3 kg per ha. On areas sown with maize (both grain maize and green maize) on average 0.8 kg per ha of plant protection products were consumed, almost all were herbicides.

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE

Regulation (EC) No 1185/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2009 concerning statistics on pesticides deals with the pesticides which are plant protection products; however, it is expected that biocide products will become part of this regulation. Therefore, the data published for the reference year 2017 refer only to plant protection products.

The European classification of active substances in plant protection products in use in 2014 was supplemented by Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/269 of 16 February 2017 amending Regulation (EC) No. 1185/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council on statistics on pesticides with regard to the list of active substances with new validated active substances, and certain irregularities were eliminated.

The quantity of active substances consumed and the quantity of active substances sold in the plant protection products in a given year are not directly comparable, as the data on the quantities of active substances sold refer to the data that the wholesalers deliver for sale to retailers so that they do not reflect quantities actually sold in the reference year (https://www.stat.si/StatWeb/en/News/Index/7617).
