7,605 theatrical performances held by Slovene cultural institutions in 2017 were seen by 1.4 million people, each on average by 185 persons.
World Theatre Day has been celebrated on 27 March since 1962. The initiative came from the International Theatre Institute (ITI), which was established in 1948 on the initiative of UNESCO with the aim to improve the status of all members of the performing arts professions. Today the ITI is the largest such organisation for international exchange in performing arts with over 90 centres on all continents.
Statistically speaking, theatrical performances are drama and other theatre works, puppet shows and experimental theatre, modern dance and ballet, and opera and other musical performances. These performances are held by theatres and the two operas as well as by houses of culture and by cultural centres and institutions. We are presenting theatrical activity for 2017.Cultural institutions in Slovenia held 7,605 theatrical performances, on average 21 per day. Three quarters of performances were own productions and the rest were tours.
Theatrical performances were seen by 1.4 million people, each on average by 185 persons.
Cultural institutions prepared 1,233 premieres of various theatrical performances. About half of them were drama and other theatre works; in other words, on average almost two new performances per day.
Theatre festivals and educational programs
Cultural institutions prepared 36 theatre festivals (15 of them were prepared by theatres) with 487 events (half of them were prepared by theatres).
In addition to festivals, these institutions provided educational programs and workshops of two types: 1,301 theatre and puppet theatre programs (attended by about 93,000 people, on average about 71 per program) and 704 dance programs (attended by just over 10,000 people, on average about 15 per program).
Theatres and the two operas
Theatrical performances in 47 Slovene theatres and operas were created by just over 1,200 employees (16% of them younger than 35 years) and 3,050 external collaborators.
Half of the employees had an occupation that is classified among cultural occupations (actors, musicians, dancers, writers and other artistic professionals) and the others had technical and other support occupations without which it would not be possible to organise performances (stage workers, IT professionals, make-up artists, dressmakers, managers, etc.).
A third of external collaborators in theatres were employed with a contract for a copyrighted work (1,024), just over a quarter (792) were self-employed in culture, followed by students (602), sole proprietors (398), unpaid volunteers (144), etc.
With the help of technical services, persons employed in Slovene theatres and their external collaborators:
- prepared 4,751 performances
- presented 245 new theatre works
- organised 15 theatre festivals
- prepared 1,189 educational programs
